EMSSE €1,400 Stipend Scholarship 2027–2029 in Europe: Inviting Applications
If you would like your engineering master’s to bring together technical depth, financial support and experience in different academic settings, the European Master in Sustainable Systems Engineering (EMSSE) is worth a closer look. Its 2027–2029 Erasmus Mundus intake has been announced, with applications opening soon.
This English-taught, two-year joint master’s connects sustainability with autonomous systems, machine learning and optimisation, or advanced manufacturing. Its appeal lies in how these opportunities fit together: you build a shared foundation, learn alongside an international cohort and follow a specialisation across partner universities.
Compared with a tuition-only scholarship, the Erasmus Mundus award also supports living costs. Compared with a conventional single-campus master’s, EMSSE makes academic mobility part of your education. For someone whose interests cross engineering disciplines, that combination offers a thoughtful reason to apply. The starting point is finding the route that feels right for your background and ambitions.
Albania is compulsory. Your pathway determines the other two partner locations before the final project.
University of Technology of Compiègne. AOS specialisation; also a first-semester option on other routes.
University of Genoa. SoSE specialisation; also a first-semester option on other routes.
Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. AMS specialisation; also a first-semester option on other routes.
Polytechnic University of Tirana. All students join the shared second semester here.
01 Which EMSSE route matches your interests?
Your preferred specialisation helps determine where you study. With the partner locations in mind, it may help to compare the technical focus of each route. All include a shared second semester in Tirana, followed by specialist study and a final thesis in a research or company setting.
| Specialisation | Technical focus | Semesters 1 → 2 → 3 |
|---|---|---|
| SoSE: Systems of Systems Engineering | Interacting autonomous systems, sensing and control | Compiègne or Barcelona → Tirana → Genoa |
| AOS: Advanced machine learning and Optimisation of Systems | Prediction, optimisation and decision-making | Barcelona or Genoa → Tirana → Compiègne |
| AMS: Advanced Manufacturing Systems | Smart factories, automation and manufacturing operations | Compiègne or Genoa → Tirana → Barcelona |
My recommendation is to connect your preferred specialisation to a project you enjoyed working on. A scheduling project, for example, could help explain an interest in manufacturing optimisation. Describing your contribution gives that choice a clearer academic purpose.
02 What does an EMSSE scholarship actually cover?
The Erasmus Mundus award covers participation costs and provides €1,400 monthly across both academic years. Understanding this support helps you assess affordability. Participation coverage includes tuition, full health insurance and other mandatory course costs.
The separate EMSSE mobility award provides €850 monthly during semesters 1–3. Tuition-waiver places are another option, with possible Erasmus+ support for two semesters. You can hold only one of these three offers, so it helps to distinguish a tuition waiver from support for everyday expenses.
EMSSE’s post-selection FAQ confirms that scholarship and tuition-waiver recipients receive participation-cost coverage, including insurance. Accommodation is not provided: students arrange housing with programme guidance. Allow room in your budget for rent and moving between locations.
Applicants worldwide can compete, but previous EMJM scholarship recipients are ineligible for another EMJM award. The funding rules also prohibit another EU-funded scholarship for the same course alongside EMJM support.
03 Can your degree and English background qualify?
A relevant degree equivalent to at least 180 ECTS is required. If the study routes and funding suit your plans, your academic background is the next consideration. Listed backgrounds include computer, electronic, control, management and biomedical engineering, plus computer science. Industrial, mechanical, electrical, chemical and civil engineering, and applied mathematics, require preliminary evaluation.
Accepted English thresholds include IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEFL iBT 87 or Cambridge B2 First 173. An entirely English-taught degree can qualify for exemption: obtain an official university letter confirming the teaching language.
I would request that university letter before booking a test, as it may save you an unnecessary expense. EMSSE asks for university confirmation even from applicants from English-speaking countries.
04 How should you prepare and submit the EMSSE application?
Applications go through EMSSE’s central portal rather than email. If your background fits, you can begin preparing your account and documents now. Profile preparation is available before the campaign opens.
- Create your account in the EMSSE application portal. Complete your profile before opening.
- Gather your supporting evidence: CV, degree or graduation declaration, complete transcripts, passport or eligible EU identity document, and English evidence or the permitted declaration. Add English translations where needed.
- Bring your interests into the application: submit a motivation letter of no more than 500 words or a self-presentation video of no more than 60 seconds. Rank your specialisation and mobility preferences.
- Consider a useful recommendation. Recommendations are optional but carry 10 points in the published assessment. A teacher or supervisor who knows your work can help demonstrate your readiness.
- Submit the live campaign application and retain confirmation. Use the admissions instructions for declaration forms and subsequent requirements. Shortlisted candidates attend an interview.
As you prepare, the official curriculum, scholarship rules and English-proof guidance can help you review your choices. For an interview, I recommend practising an explanation of one technical decision from your work and how EMSSE could develop that interest. This is preparation advice rather than a published question list.
05 A few questions as you prepare
Can final-year students apply?
Yes, provisional admission is possible. Use the graduation declaration and meet the completion and certificate deadlines below.
Does a strong GPA guarantee funding?
No. Grades, degree relevance, motivation, references and other factors contribute to competitive selection; admission alone does not establish your funding package.
Will every student study in all four countries?
No. Each advertised route uses three partner locations before the final project. Four consortium countries do not mean four compulsory study destinations.
06 When are the EMSSE 2027–2029 deadlines?
The EMSSE scholarship application window opens on 15 November 2026. The last date to apply for the European Master in Sustainable Systems Engineering 2027–2029 intake is 15 February 2027 at 23:59 Paris time (UTC+1).
Interviews are scheduled for 18–20 March 2027, with results planned for the end of March. Required English evidence and certified translations are due by 10 June. Final-year applicants must graduate by 31 July and provide degree certificates by 31 August.
For now, you might begin with your preferred route, request the document likely to take longest, and sketch the project experience you would like to build on. Those small steps can make the application feel more manageable when the window opens.
