About the Council Traineeship Program
The Council of the European Union traineeship is a 5-month paid training program that offers a behind-the-scenes look at how EU decisions are made. Held in Brussels, this program gives selected candidates a unique opportunity to work within the General Secretariat of the Council (GSC) in either policy-related or support teams.
There are two (02) application rounds each year:
- February intake: 16 February – 15 July
- September intake: 1 September – 31 January.
Who Can Apply?
Whether you come from law, economics, international relations, communications, IT, translation, or public administration, there’s a place for you!
Main Eligibility Criteria:
- Nationality: EU citizens (main program); international students with disabilities (positive action program)
- Education:
- Main program: A completed university degree
- Positive action: At least a third-year student at a university or college
- Languages: Proficient in English or French (C1 level minimum) and a strong command of at least two official EU languages
- Experience: No more than 6 weeks of prior experience in any EU institution or body
- Age: No age limit
- Disability Program: Requires documentation of disability.

What Will You Do as a Trainee?
Trainees are embedded into real teams, gaining experience in both policy and administrative roles. You can choose two preferred domains when applying.

- Translating key documents
- Attending Council preparatory bodies
