Before you build your application around a monthly stipend, understand the funding position: IMFSE scholarships will be issued, but Erasmus Mundus funding for this intake is awaiting confirmation. This guide helps you decide whether your degree fits, prepare your documents and meet the correct deadline.

Can you apply for IMFSE funding in 2027?
Status: Applications open for academic year 2027–2028; programme starts in September 2027.
Nationalities: All nationalities welcome.
Degree: Two-year, English-taught master’s; 120 ECTS with compulsory international mobility.
Funding: Full and partial IMFSE awards; Erasmus Mundus renewal pending.
Potential EMJM benefit: Tuition waiver and up to €1,400 monthly, subject to funding confirmation.

Self-funded deadlines: Before 1 April 2027 if a visa is needed; before 1 June 2027 otherwise.
Official information verified: 5 October 2026.

Which IMFSE scholarships can you receive?

IMFSE offers contributor-supported full and partial scholarships, while renewed Erasmus Mundus support remains uncertain. Awards can range from tuition reductions and waivers to support equivalent to a full Erasmus scholarship, depending on budget and selection.

The published EMJM package is a tuition waiver and up to €1,400 monthly. Treat that as conditional until funding and your award are confirmed. Do not budget separate travel or installation grants from an older announcement.

If you enrol without funding, published annual tuition is €8,000 for Programme Country students and €12,000 for Partner Country students. Tuition includes enrolment and an insurance scheme; accommodation, living and travel costs are additional.

Where will you study fire safety engineering?

You will study across partner institutions and complete a master’s thesis in your final semester. The four full partners are Ghent University in Belgium, Lund University in Sweden, the University of Edinburgh in the UK and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Spain.

  • Semester 1: Ghent or Edinburgh for fire protection fundamentals.
  • Semester 2: Lund for enclosure fire dynamics, risk analysis and human behaviour.
  • Semester 3: Ghent or UPC for advanced study.
  • Semester 4: A thesis hosted through a partner or approved collaboration.

Think about the problem you want to solve: evacuation, structural fire performance, industrial protection or wildfire risk. Your answer can help connect your previous work to IMFSE’s curriculum. Attendance is on campus; this is not a distance-learning programme.

Does your degree qualify?

You need a relevant accredited degree representing at least three years of full-time study or 180 ECTS. Eligible fields include engineering, materials science, chemistry, physics, architecture, urbanism, spatial planning and related disciplines.

Final-year students can apply using proof of enrolment and their latest transcript, but must graduate before the programme begins. Starting at Edinburgh? Your admission letter depends on submitting your degree, so delayed graduation documents can delay visa and housing arrangements.

If your degree title falls outside the listed fields, demonstrate the relevant academic or professional preparation in your application. IMFSE assesses eligibility through the submitted file, rather than offering advance eligibility decisions by email.

Can you apply without IELTS?

Yes, if you meet an approved alternative or exemption under Edinburgh’s English rules. An English-taught bachelor’s alone does not automatically qualify you for a waiver.

You may submit an application while your language result is pending, but the file remains incomplete and scholarship chances may be lower. Supply valid evidence before enrolment; Edinburgh also needs it before issuing your admission letter.

Book your test with both the application deadline and programme start in mind. IMFSE applies a two-year validity rule at the start month for IELTS and several other tests.

What should your application contain?

Build a complete file with academic records, identity documents, a CV, personal statement, English evidence and two references.

Document or task How to prepare it
Photo and identification Prepare your passport photo and passport copy; EEA applicants may use other official identification.
CV Prepare a Europass CV showing relevant education, projects and experience.
Personal statement Explain why fire safety engineering fits your background and goals. Keep it focused; IMFSE suggests one or two A4 pages.
Degree and transcript Request official records. Sworn translations are required if documents are not in English, Dutch, French or German.
English evidence Provide an accepted result or approved exemption; explain any pending test.
Two reference letters Ask referees early and give them concrete examples of your relevant work.
Degree verification Follow the Qualification Check instructions when prompted. Ghent lists a €59 verification fee.

Give your referees time to write about your abilities. A specific example of analytical judgement or a demanding project is more useful than general praise.

How do you apply for admission and funding?

Submit through Ghent’s OASIS application form and indicate that you want scholarship consideration.

  1. Check the requirements: Review the IMFSE application guidance, including its linked English rules.
  2. Start your file: Use the official application page to reach OASIS. Complete the scholarship question and upload your documents.
  3. Complete verification: Follow the portal instructions and Ghent’s degree-verification procedure. Flag unresolved document issues promptly.
  4. Submit and prepare: Eligible candidates are invited to an online interview; scholarship interviews take place in February. Use your statement to practise explaining your preparation and goals.

Contributor awards are allocated by IMFSE’s management board; there is no separate application to the contributing companies. Check the exact funding in your offer before committing to enrolment.

What are the deadlines and your next moves?

The last date to apply for scholarship consideration for the International Master of Science in Fire Safety Engineering, coordinated by Ghent University, is 31 January 2027. IMFSE requires submission before 1 February; the reviewed deadline page does not specify a closing time or time zone.

Self-sponsored applicants needing a visa must apply before 1 April 2027; those not needing a visa must apply before 1 June 2027. Scholarship outcomes are expected by the end of March, and self-sponsored outcomes by the end of June. Self-sponsored tuition payment is due by the end of August.

Take three steps today: choose your funding route, identify the document most likely to delay you and draft your academic case for fire safety engineering. If a full award is essential, keep your plans conditional until IMFSE confirms the funding offered to you.
