Georg Forster Research Fellowship 2025 in Germany

The Georg Forster Research Fellowship 2025 is now open for applications, offering an exceptional opportunity for postdoctoral and experienced researchers from developing and transition countries (as per OECD classification, excluding PR China and India) to conduct research in Germany for 6 to 24 months.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation administers this prestigious program, which recognizes scholars contributing to sustainable development and achieving the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Fellowship Overview

The Georg Forster Research Fellowship supports outstanding researchers in all disciplines whose work has relevance to sustainable development in their home countries. The program offers:

  • A monthly stipend of €2,700 for postdoctoral researchers and €3,200 for experienced researchers.
  • Additional benefits including family allowances, health insurance subsidies, and travel expense allowances.
  • The flexibility to divide the fellowship into multiple stays within a three-year period.
  • Access to intensive German language courses for both fellows and their partners.
  • Continued support through alumni programs and research collaborations after the fellowship ends.

Who Can Apply?

Researchers from eligible developing and transition countries with above-average academic qualifications are encouraged to apply. The program particularly encourages applications from female scientists and those from Least Developed Countries (LDCs).

Eligibility Criteria

  • Postdoctoral Researchers: Must have completed their doctorate within the last four years or be within six months of completing their PhD.
  • Experienced Researchers: Must have completed their doctorate within the last twelve years and possess an extensive list of peer-reviewed publications.
  • Research Focus: Must contribute to sustainable development in the applicant’s home country.
  • Host Institution in Germany: Applicants must secure a host researcher in Germany who will provide a statement of support and access to research facilities.
  • Language Requirements: While German language proficiency is not mandatory, applicants must meet the linguistic requirements necessary for their research project.

New Application Review Cycles

The Selection Committee reviews applications 2 times a year in June 2025, and October 2025. Applicants will receive an email confirmation once their submission is received.
