Germany Bonn SDG Fellowships 2026 Now Open

The University of Bonn is inviting international postdoctoral scholars to apply for the Bonn SDG Fellowships for research projects related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This prestigious opportunity allows researchers from Africa, Latin America, and South/East Asia to collaborate with faculty at the University of Bonn for a period of 3 to 12 months.

Benefits of the Bonn SDG Fellowships

Selected fellows will receive comprehensive funding to support their research stay in Germany whereas the funding includes:

  • Monthly scholarship of €3,000
  • Additional support for family members (€300 for a spouse, €250 per child)
  • Research expense allowance of up to €500 per month
  • Travel allowance (varies by country of origin).

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be an international postdoctoral researcher with foreign citizenship.
  • Be invited by a professor at the University of Bonn for a joint research project.
  • Have a long-term affiliation with a university or research institute in Africa, Latin America, or South/East Asia.
  • Demonstrate proven expertise in a research field related to the SDGs.

Available Scholarships and Selection Process

The University of Bonn awards up to five fellowships per year, depending on available funding. Applications are evaluated based on:

  • Academic Quality and Mutual Benefit (50%) – Research project’s contribution to the SDGs, relevance to the fellow’s region, integration into Bonn’s academic community, and overall research excellence.
  • Strategic Relevance and Future Collaboration (50%) – Strength of existing collaboration, potential for long-term research partnerships, and alignment with Bonn’s research priorities.

Selection Process:

  1. Pre-assessment by independent university experts (anonymous evaluation)
  2. Final decision by a university-wide committee

In case of a tie, Academic Quality and Mutual Benefit will be prioritized.
