This is a golden opportunity for scholars seeking a productive, serene research environment in one of Germany’s most historic and academically rich regions—Greifswald, near the beautiful Baltic Sea.
About the Alfried Krupp Fellowship Program
Founded in 2002 through a partnership between the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation, the University of Greifswald, and the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the Kolleg provides a stimulating, interdisciplinary environment for research. Since 2007, the fellowship program has supported scholars in focusing on significant academic projects free from teaching and administrative duties.
The 2026/27 thematic focus is:
Interdisciplinary research on the Baltic Sea region – from culture to ecology.
However, researchers from all disciplines are welcome to apply, as long as there’s scholarly excellence and potential for collaboration with the University of Greifswald.
Fellowship Types & Eligibility
- Alfried Krupp Senior Fellowships: Open to distinguished academics with an excellent track record in research and teaching.
- Alfried Krupp Junior Fellowships: For early-career researchers who hold a doctoral degree and show strong academic promise.
Fellowship Details
The Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg Greifswald will award up to six Senior Fellowships and eight Junior Fellowships, totaling 14 positions for the 2026/27 academic year. Each fellowship may be undertaken for either one semester—October 1 to March 31 or April 1 to September 30—or for the full academic year, running from October 1 to September 30.
Fellows will receive a generous financial stipend aligned with their academic qualifications. In addition, the program provides free accommodation and dedicated workspace at the Kolleg, ensuring scholars can pursue their research in a focused, supportive environment. Fellows are welcome to bring their partners and/or children, making the fellowship family-friendly. While the stipend and living arrangements are covered, insurance, laboratory, and travel expenses are not included in the fellowship support.
Applicants for Senior Fellowships are encouraged to align the fellowship with a research semester from their home university to create a full one-year research stay. Moreover, if the home institution can contribute to the costs or co-fund the fellowship period, these contributions are highly appreciated and should be included in the application.
