Heritage Fellowships 2026-2027 at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

Are you a researcher, artist, filmmaker, or curator interested in heritage studies? The Centre for Advanced Study inherit.heritage in transformation, a BMBF-funded Käte Hamburger Kolleg at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, invites applications for its 2026-2027 international fellowship program. This opportunity is open to those exploring historical, contemporary, and future transformations in heritage.

Fellowship Theme for 2026-2027: Addressing Heritage Loss

Applicants are encouraged to explore the dismantling, destruction, and revision of heritage, including issues of disinheritance and disposal. Projects should align with at least one of inherit’s guiding themes:

    • Decentring the West
    • Decentring the Human
    • Transforming Value

Applications from underrepresented regions, including the Global South and Eastern Europe, are highly encouraged. Artists, filmmakers, and curators are also welcome to apply.

Fellowship Details

  • Duration: Up to 10 months (1 October 2026 – 31 July 2027)
  • Location: Berlin, Germany (Fellows must reside in Berlin for the duration of the fellowship, except for short visits for research or presentations.)
  • Funding: A monthly stipend based on career stage and family situation or replacement cover (for German applicants). Economy-class travel costs to Berlin and visa fees are also covered.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • PhD (completed and successfully defended by the application deadline) or substantial portfolio of accomplished work (for artists/practitioners).
  • Strong publishing record or professional achievements related to heritage.
