If you are planning to take IELTS—or have already taken the test through IDP—there is now another reason to tell the story behind your study, career or migration ambitions.

Applications are open for the IDP IELTS Future Award 2026, with six applicants set to receive USD $5,000 each to help them move toward their future goals.

What makes this opportunity interesting is that you do not need to submit a long research proposal or complicated scholarship application. Instead, IDP wants to understand what achieving your target IELTS score means to you and what you would do with the award if selected.

Do You Need to Have Already Taken IELTS?

Not necessarily. IDP says the Future Award is available to both current and future IDP IELTS test takers, and applicants may be taking either IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training.

First, create an account on the IDP IELTS Future Award platform and enter your personal information while accepting the competition terms.

You will then answer two short written questions.

Finally, you must prepare a one-minute video.

The central questions are essentially about your future:

What would achieving your desired IELTS score mean to you, and how would winning $5,000 help you reach your goals?

This means your application should not become a generic essay about why IELTS is important.

The judges already know what IELTS is.

They need to understand why it matters specifically to you.

How Would I Approach the Written Answers?

I would build the application around one clear story:

Where I am now → what I want to achieve → what currently stands between me and that goal → how IELTS helps → what the $5,000 would allow me to do next.

Be specific.

Instead of writing, “I dream of studying overseas,” explain the degree, professional pathway or personal ambition you are pursuing and why reaching the required IELTS score changes what becomes possible.

Likewise, do not simply say the money would “support my education.”

Explain its practical role. Perhaps it would contribute toward tuition, relocation, study preparation or another legitimate part of your next step—provided that use fits the award’s official terms.

What About the One-Minute Video?

One minute disappears quickly. I would not try to repeat your entire written application. Use the video to make the person behind the application memorable.

Start with your ambition, explain the obstacle or turning point, and finish with what receiving the award would enable you to do. Natural delivery will usually be more convincing than memorising an overly polished speech.

Is This a Scholarship?

Not in the traditional university-scholarship sense. The IDP IELTS Future Award is a competition offering six USD $5,000 awards rather than admission to a particular degree programme or a guaranteed tuition scholarship.

That distinction matters. Winning the award does not itself secure university admission, a visa or an IELTS score.

Application Deadline

The last date to submit an application for the IDP IELTS Future Award 2026 is 2 October 2026 at 23:59 according to the applicant’s local time of residence.

Winners are expected to be notified by 13 November 2026.

My advice is not to turn this into another formal scholarship essay full of impressive words. IDP is asking for your ambition and your story. Give them a clear goal, a believable route toward it and a convincing explanation of why this $5,000 could make a meaningful difference.
