Japan Honjo International (HISF) Scholarships 2027 for Master and PhD Process Explained

Japan has plenty of scholarships that require a university nomination. The Honjo International Scholarship 2027 does not.

International Master’s and PhD applicants can apply directly to the Honjo International Scholarship Foundation (HISF) without waiting for their Japanese university to nominate them. Better still, applicants who have not yet received their final graduate-school admission result can still enter the competition for 2027.

The scholarship is now accepting applications for 2027, with approximately 10 awards available and monthly support ranging from ¥180,000 to ¥230,000, depending on the remaining length of the degree.

The Longer Your Degree, the Lower the Monthly Rate

Honjo uses an unusual funding formula.

Students whose remaining degree period is one or two years receive ¥230,000 per month. A three-year programme attracts ¥210,000 per month, while those requiring four or five years receive ¥180,000 monthly. Funding normally continues for the minimum period needed to finish the degree.

The scholarship does not have to be repaid, and recipients may also qualify for support toward attending international academic conferences.

There is one restriction worth noticing: Honjo generally does not permit scholars to combine its award with another scholarship, although specific schemes including MEXT, the Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship, JSPS, certain JST fellowships and JICA funding are explicitly listed as exceptions.

You Can Apply From Abroad — Even Before Final Admission

This is perhaps the scholarship’s strongest feature for international applicants.

You can apply while living outside Japan if you are planning to enroll in a Japanese graduate school in spring or fall 2027. You do not necessarily need the final acceptance letter by October 31, 2026. If the university result has not yet been issued, applicants can enter the expected announcement date and send the admission document to HISF later.

Applicants are free to choose any Japanese university and graduate course that fits their goals. Undergraduate study, however, is not covered.

Who Actually Qualifies for Honjo 2027 Scholarship?

Applicants must be non-Japanese citizens and normally be entering or continuing a Master’s or doctoral programme in Japan.

There are firm age limits.

• Master’s applicants: You must begin the Master’s programme by age 30.
• PhD applicants: You must begin the doctoral programme by age 35.

HISF states there are no exceptions to these age limits. The remaining enrolment period must also exceed 12 months. Applicants are expected to have a clear intention to use their education in ways that contribute to their home country and to participate in the Foundation’s international network.

The Japanese Requirement Is Easy to Underestimate

Honjo does not specify a JLPT score, but applicants must be able to hold a basic conversation in Japanese. More importantly, the scholarship interview is conducted entirely in Japanese, with no exemption, so an English-taught Master’s or PhD does not remove this requirement.

The required two-minute research video may be recorded in either Japanese or English. However, the Foundation’s designated research plan is required in Japanese; applicants who are less confident in Japanese may additionally submit an English version.

Submit Honjo Scholarship Application in This Manner

The Honjo application pathway is unusually direct, but it has several steps applicants should prepare before opening the portal.

1. First, identify your Japanese Master’s or PhD programme scholarship and either secure admission or begin the university application process.
2. Check your age and remaining study period against Honjo’s eligibility rules.
3. Enter the HISF Online Application System once the cycle opens and then complete the scholarship form and upload your photograph.
4. Prepare the required two-minute research video explaining your proposed research. Your face must be visible, and the presentation can be in Japanese or English.
5. Prepare the Foundation’s designated research proposal, which must be written in Japanese; applicants who are less confident may additionally submit an English version.
6. Upload undergraduate transcripts and, where available, graduate-school transcripts.
7. Arrange a recommendation letter from your academic supervisor or previous supervisor.
8. Upload your university admission/enrolment evidence if already available.
9. Submit the online application and save the application number and generated PDF. HISF uses that number when publishing screening results.

An optional 30-second self-promotion video can also be submitted, giving applicants a rare additional opportunity to introduce themselves beyond the research proposal.

Three Dates Decide the 2027 Competition

Applications for Japanese Honjo fully-funded scholarship 2027 opened at 11:00 a.m. on September 1, 2026 and close on October 31, 2026. This is the period in which the online application system is available, so November is too late to suddenly discover that your supervisor still owes you a recommendation.

Document Screening Batch: Applicants progressing beyond the first assessment will see their application numbers published by January 31, 2027. That is why saving the number generated after submission is not optional administrative housekeeping—it is how you identify your result.

Interview and Final Selection Batch: Interviews are planned for February 9, 2027, normally in Tokyo or by video call for candidates unable to attend. Final scholarship results are scheduled for March 31, 2027.

Only Around 10 Winners — So the Research Story Matters

Honjo expects to award roughly 10 scholarships in this cycle, which makes this a genuinely selective competition.

The research proposal therefore cannot merely describe what you want to study. Applicants are specifically asked to explain their research goal and schedule, what they have already achieved academically and socially, and—crucially—how the knowledge gained in Japan will contribute to their home country.

For international applicants able to handle basic Japanese, the combination is compelling: direct application, no university nomination, all research fields, applications from abroad, and up to ¥230,000 per month.
