The John J. Sweeney Scholarship carries a total value of $20,000, which will be applied toward the scholar’s tuition fees for a postgraduate program at Ulster University. Any remaining balance may be used for study materials, course-related expenses, living costs, or travel—ensuring recipients are fully supported throughout their academic journey in Northern Ireland.

Who Can Apply?
The scholarship welcomes U.S. citizens who have accepted a full-time offer to study at Ulster University and have made a firm admission commitment. Applicants must also meet one of the following criteria:
- Be a current member of a U.S. labor union;
- Have a familial connection (parent, sibling, aunt, uncle, or grandparent) who is or was a union member; or
- Provide a reference letter from a recognized U.S. union sponsor.
Application Process
Candidates must apply through Ulster University’s online application form, ensuring all required documents are uploaded and sections completed. Applications must include:
- Scanned copy of original degree certificate (GPA 2.8 or above)
- Personal statement (500–750 words)
- Two academic reference letters
- Scanned copy of U.S. passport
