Ulster University has officially announced the opening of applications for the John J. Sweeney Scholarship 2026, a prestigious award supporting U.S. students pursuing a full-time MSc or LLM. This scholarship honors the late John J. Sweeney, President Emeritus of the AFL-CIO, who spent his lifetime championing the rights and welfare of working people across the United States and internationally.

Who Can Apply?

The scholarship welcomes U.S. citizens who have accepted a full-time offer to study at Ulster University and have made a firm admission commitment. Applicants must also meet one of the following criteria:

  • Be a current member of a U.S. labor union;
  • Have a familial connection (parent, sibling, aunt, uncle, or grandparent) who is or was a union member; or
  • Provide a reference letter from a recognized U.S. union sponsor.
