JUSTCOOL China Scholarships 2027 Open at 3 Chinese Universities—Its Chinese Alternate to Erasmus Mundus
Europe has Erasmus Mundus. China now has JUSTCOOL—a new option for science graduates seeking a funded route abroad. Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Tongji University are recruiting international applicants for 2027 PhD entry, with a fellowship, tuition waiver, free accommodation and medical insurance.
The biggest attraction? You can enter directly after your bachelor’s degree. The biggest hurdle? Your graduation date and top-20% academic ranking must fit the rules—and you will face entrance exams. Applications close on 14 November 2026, so let’s check whether this opportunity belongs on your shortlist and how to prepare.
Table of Content
First, do you fit the entry rules?
You need a bachelor’s degree awarded between June 2026 and July 2027, a relevant major and a top-20% ranking in your undergraduate major/programme. The eligible subjects are Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology; applicants must hold non-Chinese citizenship and show serious research interest.
Take out your transcript and check those points before anything else. Graduating in June 2027? That falls inside the stated window. Graduated several years ago? Ask admissions whether another route suits you; do not assume a higher qualification cancels the graduation-date rule.
Your GPA also needs context. “I have good grades” and “I rank in the top 20%” are different claims. As a preparation step, ask your department or registrar how it can document your standing within your major. This is especially useful if your university does not print rankings on transcripts.
You may qualify without IELTS if your entire undergraduate programme was taught in English. Qualifying native-English applicants also have a waiver route. Otherwise, accepted minimums include IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 90, Duolingo 110 or PTE Academic 61, with test results within two years of the deadline.
Studied in English? Request an official medium-of-instruction letter that clearly describes the whole programme. Had only a few English-taught courses? Check with admissions before relying on that evidence. The aim is to make your eligibility easy to verify.
| Eligibility check | You meet the rule if… |
|---|---|
| Nationality | You are a non-Chinese citizen with a valid foreign passport. |
| Subject | Your bachelor’s major is Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or Biology. |
| Graduation date | Your bachelor’s degree is awarded between June 2026 and July 2027. |
| Academic ranking | You rank in the top 20% of your undergraduate major/programme. A high GPA alone does not establish this. |
| English proficiency | Your entire undergraduate programme was taught in English, you meet the native-English exemption, or you hold IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 90, Duolingo 110 or PTE Academic 61. Test results must be within two years of the deadline. |
| Research commitment | You have a strong interest in your subject and intend to pursue doctoral research. |
What would studying through JUSTCOOL look like?
You enroll at one admitting university, can take courses at the other two and receive your doctoral certificates from your admitting university. The 3-university partnership expands your academic access; it does not mean three separate PhDs or a compulsory tour of three campuses.
Instead of choosing by university name alone, picture the research you want to do. Which questions keep you reading beyond the syllabus? Which lab methods or mathematical problems would you willingly spend years investigating? Use those answers to explore faculty work at the partner institutions.
The funding package includes a PhD fellowship, full tuition waiver, free accommodation, research/teaching assistantship and free medical insurance. The published funding page gives no monthly amount and does not list airfare.
Before planning your move, ask for the fellowship value, payment timing, assistantship duties and renewal conditions. You want to know what an ordinary month in Shanghai would look like financially—not just whether the scholarship sounds generous.
How do you build a convincing document folder to Apply for JustCOOL China Scholarship?
Start with the compulsory records, then make your academic strengths easy to spot. Use this checklist to organize the work:
| Document | What to prepare? |
|---|---|
| Passport | Valid through 1 March 2028. |
| Degree/expected-graduation certificate and transcripts | Notarized translations if not Chinese or English. |
| Two recommendations | Signed by professors in your discipline; Chinese or English. |
| English evidence | Proof matching your qualifying route. |
| Non-criminal record and physical examination form | Medical results valid six months. |
| Nationality documents | Extra records apply to former Chinese citizens. |
| CSCSE degree authentication | Later-stage requirement for relevant overseas graduates, before enrolment. |
| Awards and papers | Optional supporting evidence. |
For recommendations, give your professors something useful to work with: your transcript, a short account of your academic interests and a reminder of the project or course they supervised. A specific example of how you solved a difficult problem tells a reader more than a page of general praise.
No published paper? Do not treat an optional upload as a reason to give up. Organize the evidence you actually have, such as a strong final-year project or meaningful laboratory experience, wherever the portal permits it. Explain your contribution accurately.
For your own preparation, write a short research-interest note: what interests you, what you have already explored and what you hope to learn next. Treat this as an interview exercise; the notice does not list a separate study plan or research proposal among its compulsory uploads.
How do you move from JustCool Scholarship application to admission?
You apply centrally, pass academic assessments and then choose your target university. Here is the sequence:
- Read before registering: Check the official admissions guide and examination syllabuses. Mark topics you need to revise.
- Submit your application: Use the JUSTCOOL portal, select your major and upload records. Check fee arrangements with admissions.
- Prepare for selection: Written exams are scheduled for 12 December 2026, tentatively online; interviews follow in January 2027.
- Choose and confirm: University selection follows a successful interview. Accept a preliminary offer within one week; formal notices follow in February, with spring or autumn 2027 enrolment.
Now the part you can control: begin revision while collecting documents. Try questions without notes, identify where your reasoning breaks down and revisit those topics. Reading a familiar chapter can feel reassuring; solving an unfamiliar problem reveals what you actually understand.
For interview practice, explain your strongest academic project aloud. What question did you investigate? What did you personally do? What did the result teach you? Clear, honest answers are a better starting point than memorizing an impressive-sounding speech.
When must you apply—and what should you do today?
The last date to apply for JUSTCOOL: PhD at Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Tongji University is 14 November 2026, at 24:00 Beijing time.
Your three-move challenge: choose your discipline and confirm your graduation window; request the document likely to take longest; and complete one syllabus-based practice session. That gives you a route, a document plan and an honest picture of your exam readiness.
Set your personal submission target several days earlier. Let deadline day be the day you check your application status—not the day you discover that a professor’s signature is missing.
