What Does the Killam International Research Award Cover?

This scholarship is designed to remove the financial barriers that often come with international research. Winning the award means you can focus on your work abroad without worrying about the heavy costs of travel and living.

Successful candidates can receive up to $6,000 to support expenses such as:

  1. International travel costs
  2. Accommodation and meals abroad
  3. Living expenses during the research period
  4. Research-related fees and supplies
  5. Study or travel visas
  6. Insurance and other necessary expenditures

The award supports research stays of up to 3 months at an institution or location outside Canada, giving scholars the freedom to gain meaningful global research exposure.


Who Can Apply?

This opportunity is strictly for those who wish to pursue doctoral studies. Applicants must already be part of the Killam award community.

To be eligible, you must:

  1. Have accepted or currently hold a Level 2 Killam Predoctoral Award
  2. Be a current Killam Doctoral Scholarship holder at Dalhousie University
  3. Not have previously received a Killam International Research Award or another international travel supplement
  4. Conduct research that directly supports your Dalhousie doctoral studies
  5. Propose research that requires physical presence at the host location abroad
  6. Remain registered full-time in a PhD program throughout the research period
  7. Hold an active Killam award when your international research begins
  8. Use the award within one year of receiving the notice
  9. Return to Dalhousie University to complete your degree after the research stay
