What This Fellowship Offers (Funding & Academic Support)

The programme extends far more than a scholarship—it’s a full support system that fuels your research, mobility, and academic growth.

Here’s what selected fellows receive:

  • €1,650 monthly living allowance
  • €100 monthly research allowance
  • Health insurance subsidy: 50% of costs, up to €100/month (if not mandatorily insured)
  • Additional support for fellows raising children
  • Extra living allowance for scholars researching outside their home country
  • Tuition fee subsidy up to €10,000 per year (for those studying abroad)
  • Travel and conference funding for academic trips
  • Access to two high-level workshops in Germany and the UK
  • An interdisciplinary international research community hosted by the Studienstiftung, Leo Baeck Institute London, and Leibniz Institute Simon Dubnow

Fellows may also work part-time within restricted limits:

  • Up to 25% of a full-time role in research/teaching
  • Up to 5 hours/week for non-academic jobs
    (Note: Combining this fellowship with other scholarships is not allowed.)

Who Is Eligible (Academic and Project Requirements)

You’ll need a strong academic foundation and a project that clearly aligns with the programme’s core theme.

Applicants must:

  • Hold an excellent university degree
  • Have completed their most recent degree not before February 2022
  • Possess formal eligibility for doctoral studies or admission to a PhD programme
  • Be conducting a research project focused on German-Jewish history or culture
  • Be willing to participate in two in-person workshops during the fellowship year
  • Demonstrate the ability to work in German and/or English

The programme welcomes doctoral candidates of all nationalities and from any accredited university worldwide.


How to Apply (Step-by-Step Guide)

Your application must be complete, well-organized, and compiled as a single PDF (except for recommendation letters sent separately).

Submit the following documents (in English or German):

  1. Completed application form
  2. One-page motivation letter
  3. Curriculum vitae
  4. Copies of university degree certificates (with grades and ranking, if available)
  5. Research proposal (max. 5 pages)
  6. Research schedule for 2026/27, including planned trips
  7. Letter of recommendation from your PhD supervisor
  8. Second recommendation letter

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to two video interviews in April/May 2026.

The last date to apply for the Leo Baeck Fellowship 2026 is February 1, 2026. Shortlisted candidates will proceed to interviews in April/May for final selection.
