Max Planck Institute of Meteorology PhD Scholarships for March 2026 Intake

Are you passionate about climate research, Earth system modelling, or making data work for a better future? Then this is your moment! The International Max Planck Research School on Earth System Modelling (IMPRS-ESM) in Hamburg, Germany is now accepting international applications for its highly competitive, fully funded PhD positions beginning March 1, 2026.

Applications are open and only 8 top candidates from around the world will be selected to join this elite interdisciplinary program.


Funding Package

All selected PhD students will receive monthly financial support of approximately €2,000 for three years, covering:

  • Living expenses in Hamburg
  • No tuition fees (only a small semester fee required)
  • Public transport included with semester fee.

You’re eligible if you:

  • Hold a Master’s degree (or expect to receive one soon) in: Physics, Geophysical Sciences (meteorology/oceanography), Ecology, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Economics, or Political Science.
  • Have a strong motivation to contribute to climate science
  • Are ready to join an international and interdisciplinary team in Hamburg.

Application Timeline

The last date to apply for the PhD Program at IMPRS-ESM is 15 September 2025. Shortlisted applicants will be invited for interviews in late November 2025, and the program officially begins on 1 March 2026.
