What’s in it for you?
The Maxwell King Scholarship (MKS) offers:
- $52,352 per annum (2025 rate) as a living allowance (stipend)
- Research allowance for your academic expenses
- Relocation allowance, if applicable
- Awarded to 2 students per year:
- 1 from Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS)
- 1 from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
Who Can Apply?

You must be:
- An International student, OR
- An Australian/New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or humanitarian visa holder
And you must:
- Submit a scholarship application in the current year
- Meet Monash’s competitive scholarship selection criteria
- Fulfill English language proficiency requirements
- Be applying for a PhD or a Joint Research Award (with Monash as the home institution).
Selection Criteria
Monash doesn’t hand out this award lightly — this is a highly competitive scholarship, awarded based on: your academic record, prior research experience, any research outputs (e.g., publications, theses, etc.).
How to Apply?
Applying is simple. You don’t need to apply separately for the MKS. Just submit your application for a graduate research degree at Monash (https://www.monash.edu/study/fees-scholarships/scholarships/find-a-scholarship/maxwell-king-phd-scholarship?domestic=true#scholarship-details), and you’ll automatically be considered for all eligible research scholarships — including the MKS.
Important: The MKS is only awarded in the 31 October round. If you’ve already applied in an earlier round (Rounds 1–4), you’ll still be automatically considered.
