The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has officially announced its upcoming Fellowships 2026 cycle, offering generous funding to support exceptional research, writing, and scholarly publications in the humanities. Designed for independent and academic researchers alike, the NEH Fellowship provides up to $60,000 (equivalent to $5,000 per month) to enable recipients to dedicate six to twelve months to their projects without financial barriers.
About the NEH Fellowship
The NEH Fellowships are highly competitive awards that empower scholars to complete major works such as books, critical editions, peer-reviewed articles, translations with annotations, or digital scholarly resources. This program encourages applications from all disciplines of the humanities, including history, literature, philosophy, linguistics, and digital humanities. Both junior and independent scholars are welcome to apply, making it a globally inclusive research platform.
What’s New This Year Under NEH Fellowship?
NEH has made several updates for the upcoming round:
- The Fellowships for Digital Publication program is now fully merged with the main Fellowships stream, meaning born-digital projects and online scholarly resources are now fully eligible.
- Starting August 2024, NEH payments for individual awards will be issued directly to personal bank accounts (institutional deposits are no longer supported).
- Revised federal regulations (2 CFR Part 200) will apply to all awards, aligning with updated administrative and audit requirements.
How to Apply?
The application process is straightforward but requires careful preparation:
- Review the application guidelines and familiarize yourself with requirements.
- Register on Grants.gov to create an applicant account.
- Complete your full application package following NEH’s instructions.
- Submit the package on Grants.gov before the deadline.
- Track your submission and ensure your letters of recommendation are received.
Why Apply?
This fellowship not only offers financial independence but also international recognition for researchers whose work shapes the understanding of human culture, knowledge, and innovation. Whether you are developing a groundbreaking digital archive or translating forgotten texts, the NEH Fellowship can fund your vision from concept to publication.
The next cycle’s anticipated application window for NEH Fellowship will open on November 20, 2025, with the deadline set for April 10, 2026. Applicants will receive notification by December 31, 2026, and projects can begin anytime between January 1, 2027, and September 1, 2028.
