NIMS Japan Internship 2026 for International Students Accepting Applications

The NIMS Internship Program 2025 has officially opened additional applications, and this is your chance to gain hands-on experience at Japan’s leading research hub – the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS).

Since its launch in 2006, the NIMS Internship Program has welcomed over 2,000 students from 60 countries, including prestigious universities like Oxford, Cambridge, UC Berkeley, IITs, Seoul National University, and ANU. Each year, about 100 students join to work alongside top researchers, expand their global network, and access cutting-edge research facilities in Japan.

Location & Duration
Location: National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), Japan
Duration: Up to 90 consecutive calendar days, beginning any time from October 2025 and ending by March 31, 2026.
Note: If you wish to intern for longer than 90 days, you must coordinate directly with your host researcher.
Who Can Apply? – Eligibility Criteria
The NIMS Internship Program is open worldwide, but you must:
- Be a currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student throughout the internship.
- Be passionate about research in materials science or related fields.
- Be ready to work closely with a NIMS researcher (you’ll need to contact one directly before applying).
Important: Students on scholarships such as MEXT, JSPS, or JST must confirm eligibility with their providers.
Application Process
- Find Your Research Host – Explore the NIMS SAMURAI Directory to identify your preferred researcher.
- Contact the Researcher – Email them directly with your application documents.
- Submit Required Documents – Send:
- NIMS Internship Application Form (English)
- CV (English)
- Enrollment/registration certificate (issued within last 3 months)
- Official academic transcripts (Bachelor’s + Master’s, if applicable)
- Supervisor’s Recommendation – Your NIMS host researcher may request a reference letter from your academic supervisor.
- Wait for Review – If accepted, your NIMS researcher will forward your documents to the Academic Collaboration Office.

Applications for NIMS Internship program for 2026 batch are open now and the last date to apply is Friday, August 29, 2025. The internship will take place anytime between October 2025 and March 31, 2026, with a maximum stay of 90 consecutive days.
