OHCHR Indigenous Fellowship 2026 Call of Application is Open

The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has officially opened the call for applications for its Indigenous Fellowship Program (IFP) 2026, offering a unique four-week training session in Geneva. This long-standing initiative—established in 1997—invites indigenous leaders, activists, and community representatives to learn about UN mechanisms and how to effectively champion the rights of indigenous peoples on a global scale.


What Does the Fellowship Cover?

Successful fellows will receive a fully funded package including:

  • Return international airfare to Geneva, Switzerland
  • Living expenses for the full duration of the four-week program
  • Basic health insurance while participating in the training

The fellowship is conducted with simultaneous interpretation in four languagesEnglish, Spanish, French, and Portuguese—bringing together selected candidates from around the world to engage with the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, typically held in June or July.


Who Can Apply?

To be considered for the 2026 Indigenous Fellowship Program, applicants must:

  • Be Indigenous: Only indigenous individuals are eligible; non-indigenous persons are not considered.
  • Be endorsed by their community or organization: A recommendation letter from a recognized indigenous organization or community is mandatory.
  • Be willing to share their knowledge: Selected fellows must commit to training others upon return to their communities.
  • Know the language: Applicants must have good working knowledge of the fellowship’s language (English, Spanish, French, or Portuguese).
  • Have no restrictions based on education or age: The program is inclusive and considers socio-economic barriers.
