The OIST Research Internship Program 2026-2027 is now drawing strong global attention as one of Japan’s most attractive short-term, fully supported research opportunities for talented STEM students. Offered by the OIST Graduate School, this program allows aspiring researchers to immerse themselves in world-class laboratories while working alongside leading international scientists in an intensely interdisciplinary environment.
Designed for curious, research-driven students from around the world, the OIST Research Internship is more than a placement—it’s a launchpad into advanced scientific discovery and future PhD pathways.
What the OIST Research Internship Program Offers?
The research internship at OIST is a 3 to 6-month fully funded research placement hosted within one of the institute’s cutting-edge laboratories. Interns select a research project based on their academic background, research interests, and lab availability, ensuring meaningful hands-on experience rather than observational work.
Students can engage in diverse research areas including physics, chemistry, mathematical and computational sciences, marine sciences, neuroscience, molecular, cellular and developmental biology, environmental and ecological sciences, and quantum science. The program is structured to allow interns to work closely with faculty mentors while gaining exposure to advanced equipment and innovative methodologies.
Who Should Apply for This Internship?
The OIST Research Internship is ideal for students who want to strengthen their current research profile by learning advanced techniques under expert supervision. It is especially valuable for those seeking interdisciplinary exposure, as OIST actively encourages research that crosses traditional academic boundaries.
With a community of over 1,100 researchers and staff from more than 70 countries, the institute provides an exceptionally international academic environment. Students eager to expand their global academic network, collaborate across cultures, and build long-term research connections will find this internship highly rewarding.
OIST is also deeply committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Applications from women and individuals from underrepresented backgrounds are strongly encouraged, reflecting the institute’s mission to maintain a fair, inclusive, and globally representative research culture.
Financial and Logistical Support Provided
Selected interns receive comprehensive support throughout the program. OIST covers one direct round-trip airfare aligned with the internship period and provides furnished accommodation either on or off campus at no cost to the intern. Administrative assistance is also included, such as help with visa documentation, Certificate of Eligibility issuance, and institutional registration.
In addition, interns receive a daily allowance of 2,400 JPY per working day, along with access to the OIST shuttle bus system for daily transportation. This support is provided exclusively to the research intern and does not extend to dependents or family members.
