Oxford British Academy International Fellowships 2027: Education Research Call Open

Oxford’s Department of Education is inviting expressions of interest for British Academy International Fellowships 2027. Eligible early-career researchers based overseas can seek support for a two-year research project at the University of Oxford in the UK.

The programme supports original postdoctoral research and the development of an independent research career. It is jointly run by the British Academy and the Royal Society, with the British Academy covering humanities and social sciences. This particular Oxford invitation concerns education research.

The immediate task is securing host support before the national competition opens. How do you find the right mentor and turn your idea into a convincing case? This guide connects those decisions with Oxford’s expression-of-interest process.

Oxford first, British Academy competition afterwards
Status: Oxford expressions of interest open; national applications open later.
Audience: Eligible non-UK citizens based outside the UK.
Research level: Postdoctoral education research; two years of funding.
Funding: Research fellowship with research and relocation budgets; details below.
English: Spoken and written competence required; the EOI notice specifies no IELTS score.
EOI fee: No application fee stated in Oxford’s notice.
Timing: The departmental deadline comes first. See the submission timeline.
Official information checked: 23 October 2026.

01 Can your background and project fit Oxford’s call?

You need both personal eligibility and a credible match with Oxford’s education research. For this departmental invitation, applicants must:

  • Have earned a PhD within the past five years, from an institution outside the UK.
  • Have at most five years of active postdoctoral work, calculated on a full-time basis. Teaching and research in industry count; eligible career breaks are excluded.
  • Be based outside the UK, hold no UK citizenship and communicate competently in English.
  • Agree a mutually beneficial project with a senior Department of Education researcher who supports the submission.

The department’s three research themes offer a useful starting point for choosing that collaborator. The examples below suggest directions for discussion, rather than advertised project vacancies.

Oxford research theme A possible connection for your project
Language, Cognition and Development Language learning, literacy, cognitive development or the influence of learning environments.
Policy, Economy and Society Education policy, inequality, international education or the social and economic context of learning.
Pedagogy, Learning and Knowledge Teaching practices, digital education, knowledge or the design of learning activities.

I would prioritise a mentor whose recent work connects directly with your research question. Explain what their expertise would help you investigate and what your own methods, evidence or perspective would contribute. That gives your proposed partnership a clear purpose.

02 What does the British Academy fellowship fund?

The current 2027 overview advertises two years of support, plus justified research expenses of up to £12,000 and relocation costs of up to £8,000. Those caps concern separate project budgets; they are not an annual personal allowance.

The award uses an 80% full economic costing (FEC) model, which concerns how the grant contributes to the host’s project costs. The detailed guidance currently linked by the Academy is still labelled 2026: it describes salaried employment with pay set by the host. Your final 2027 salary and budget must therefore be agreed with Oxford under the applicable call rules.

The practical attraction is protected time to develop your own research, supported by a host researcher and opportunities for training and collaboration. I recommend discussing the project’s actual costs alongside its methods, particularly if collecting evidence requires fieldwork or specialist resources.

03 How do you submit Oxford’s expression of interest?

Secure your mentor’s support, prepare the short application package and submit it to Oxford’s research team. The British Academy does not find sponsors for applicants, so your academic conversation comes first.

  1. Identify a suitable senior researcher. Use Oxford’s education research themes and groups to locate relevant work. Send a focused project outline and explain the proposed collaboration.
  2. Develop the case together. Consult the British Academy International Fellowships overview and its scheme guidance page. Show the research question, originality, workable methods, expected contribution and reason for choosing this host.
  3. Prepare Oxford’s documents. Write a CV of at most two A4 pages, a case for support of at most two A4 pages, and a mentor support letter of at most one A4 page. Use font size 11 for all three documents.
  4. Submit the EOI and supporting package. Complete Oxford’s linked expression-of-interest form and send the supporting documents to [email protected] by the departmental deadline below.
  5. Continue through host selection. If invited, work with Oxford on the full British Academy application and institutional approvals. An EOI submission is the beginning of selection, rather than a funding award.

For drafting support, our research proposal preparation guide can help you connect the question, evidence and methods. Use it as optional guidance; Oxford’s short case-for-support limit governs this submission.

04 Questions before you commit to an Oxford proposal

Career stage, host choice and nomination are separate decisions. These distinctions can help you judge whether to invest in this application.

Do I need to be a senior academic?

No. This scheme targets early-career researchers, and the Academy’s FAQs specify no age ceiling. Focus on evidence of research potential appropriate to your experience.

Can I apply while finishing my PhD?

The national 2027 overview allows completion, including the viva, before 1 June 2027. Oxford’s departmental notice asks for an awarded PhD, so obtain the research team’s eligibility confirmation if yours is still pending.

Can I submit through several UK hosts?

Only one application per researcher is permitted in a round. A sponsor can also support only one application per round, so discuss their availability before developing the full proposal.

What if I recently worked or visited in the UK?

Following UK employment, the FAQs normally require a year outside the UK. Research visits totalling under three months have an exception; completed visiting fellowships or professorships have a separate minimum three-month absence rule. Current UK visiting researchers are ineligible.

Does mentor support guarantee a national submission?

No. Departmental and institutional selection still apply: the Academy normally permits eight submissions per institution in 2027. That is a submission cap across the institution, not eight guaranteed awards.

05 Oxford’s deadline and the 2027 competition timeline

The last date to submit an expression of interest for British Academy International Fellowships 2027 through the University of Oxford’s Department of Education is 28 October 2026 at 12 noon UK time (GMT; UTC+0). The Oxford invitation places departmental invitations to the full application stage in early February 2027.

The British Academy’s 2027 FAQs anticipate a national opening in early to mid-January and closure in early to mid-March 2027; an exact national closing date is not yet published. For this Oxford route, the October EOI is the deadline to act on now.
