PhD Studentship 2025 at Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia

The Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT) has announced its 2025 Call for PhD Studentships – Regular Line of Application to support outstanding research projects across all scientific fields. This prestigious opportunity provides financial assistance to PhD students conducting research in academic and scientific institutions, helping them obtain a doctoral degree.


Benefits of the PhD Studentship

Selected candidates will receive comprehensive financial support, including:

  • Monthly allowance as per the FCT’s Research Studentship and Fellowship Regulation (RBI).
  • Tuition fee coverage at the host institution.
  • Funding for additional training activities and participation in scientific meetings.
  • Personal accident insurance.
  • Travel and relocation costs, when applicable.

Funding will be provided by FCT, sourced from the State Budget and, where eligible, the European Social Fund (ESF) under the Program Demografia, Qualificações e Inclusão (PDQI).


Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the 2025 PhD Studentships, applicants must:

  • Meet the requirements to enroll in a PhD program.
  • Not hold a doctoral degree.
  • Not have previously been awarded an FCT-funded PhD studentship.
  • Be Portuguese citizens, EU citizens, citizens from third-party states, stateless individuals, or refugees.
  • If applying for a PhD studentship abroad, they must permanently or habitually reside in Portugal.

Eligible institutions include public and private higher education institutions, R&D units, Associated Laboratories, and other private non-profit institutions focused on research and development (R&D).

Application Deadlines

The application period for the 2025 PhD Studentships – Regular Line of Application opens on March 17, 2025, and closes at 5:00 pm (Lisbon time) on April 16, 2025.
