PhD Studentship 2026 in AI design of Ultrathin Lenses for Compact Imaging Devices
The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham has announced an exciting PhD opportunity for 2026 in the field of AI-driven ultrathin lens design for compact imaging devices. The fully funded studentship is open to highly motivated candidates in physics or electrical and electronic engineering, with applications closing on 17 November 2025.
Advancing Compact Imaging Technologies
The project will be hosted within the Optics and Photonics Research Group (OPG) and supervised by Dr. Mitchell Kenney, alongside collaborators from life sciences and engineering. This research aims to revolutionize imaging systems by replacing traditional bulky glass lenses with innovative metamaterial-based ultrathin optics.
With imaging playing a vital role in healthcare, biomedical research, VR/AR, and quantum technologies, the studentship focuses on designing and testing flat metamaterial optics that offer enhanced functionalities and improved computational imaging capabilities.
Research Scope and Skills Development
Students will gain hands-on experience across multiple disciplines, including:
- Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning
- Nanofabrication and computational modelling
- Metamaterial design and electromagnetic simulations
- Optical system construction and performance testing
This training equips scholars with skills relevant not only to academic research but also to industrial applications in life sciences, computing, and next-generation imaging technologies.
Eligibility and Funding
Applicants should hold, or be expecting to achieve, at least a 2:1 or First-Class honours degree in Physics or Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The position is available to UK or home students only.
The studentship covers:
- Tuition fees for three years
- A stipend to support living expenses
