Want to turn your detector experience and data-analysis skills into practical research? The six-month fellowship is expected to begin on 1 January 2027, with applications closing this October.

Can You Join the TOMAR Research Team?
Status: Open; one fellowship available.
Nationality: International applicants may apply; no nationality restriction is stated.
Academic requirements: Physics or Physical Engineering degree plus eligible master’s or non-degree course enrolment under LIP regulations.
Funding: €1,090.98 monthly maintenance allowance.
Location and duration: LIP–Coimbra, Portugal; six months, potentially renewable.
Commitment: Full-time, 35 hours weekly.
English: Good English; CV and motivation letter in English. No IELTS score is specified.
Application fee: Not stated; separate recognition or enrolment costs may apply.
Deadline: 22 October 2026, 17:00 Europe/Lisbon.
Official information checked: 8 October 2026.

Can You Apply With a Degree From Outside Portugal?

Yes, foreign qualifications are accepted subject to Portuguese recognition before the contract is signed. The call explicitly prohibits nationality-based discrimination, but international eligibility does not remove the academic conditions.

You need the specified degree and must satisfy the requirements for an eligible master’s or non-degree course under LIP regulations. Enrolment evidence may be delivered at contracting. If you study outside Portugal, ask LIP whether your particular course qualifies; the notice does not settle that point. No age ceiling is stated.

What Will You Actually Research—and How Are You Selected?

You will help assemble, operate and validate a muon tomography telescope using Resistive Plate Chambers. Under Alberto Blanco’s supervision, tasks include experimental data collection, analysis, tomographic reconstruction and prototype performance testing.

Selection factor What to demonstrate
CV: 50% Research projects, summer internships or comparable experience.
Relevance to project needs: 50% Particle-physics instrumentation and experimental data-analysis software experience.
Particularly valued RPC detector experience and MATLAB analysis.

Make your experience concrete: which detector, which dataset, which software, and what did you contribute? The fellowship may remain unawarded if nobody fits. For research that needs no laboratory facilities, compare the separate Gulbenkian Institute for Advanced Study fellowships.

Does the Allowance Cover an Entire Master’s Degree?

This is a research fellowship with a monthly allowance, not an advertised full master’s funding package. Payments are made by bank transfer. Renewal depends on the project and applicable regulations; it is not guaranteed.

The notice does not promise tuition coverage, accommodation, flights or dependent support. Budget for your course and relocation separately.

How Do You Submit Your LIP Application?

Apply directly by email, using PDF documents.

  1. Read the official EURAXESS call and confirm your academic and research fit.
  2. Prepare an English motivation letter and detailed CV, degree diploma, transcript with course grades, and relevant supporting evidence. Enrolment certification can follow at contracting.
  3. For a foreign degree, consult the official Portuguese recognition guidance and confirm the appropriate route with LIP early.
  4. Email your PDFs to [email protected], referring to offer ID 471533 in the subject. Results are communicated by email; selection still requires completion of contracting conditions.

Application Deadline: The last date to apply for the TOMAR Research Student Fellowship offered by LIP–Coimbra is 22 October 2026 at 17:00 Lisbon time (16:00 UTC). The expected start is 1 January 2027; no separate financial-assistance deadline is stated.
