Postdoctoral Scholarship 2026 at Umeå University, Sweden
The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics at Umeå University, Sweden is now accepting applications for an 8-month postdoctoral scholarship focused on Mitochondrial Protein Quality Control (PQC). This unique opportunity begins in January 2026 (or as agreed) and is funded by the KEMPE Foundations.
About the Project
The scholarship is part of the project “Integrating Mitochondrial Protein Quality Control with OXPHOS Biogenesis”, led by Assistant Professor Andreas Kohler. Research will focus on the molecular mechanisms of PQC in mitochondrially encoded proteins, an area that remains largely unexplored. The project investigates the interplay between PQC systems, mitochondrial translation, and respiratory chain complex assembly, using Saccharomyces cerevisiae as the primary research model.
Postdoctoral fellows will:
- Gain expertise in advanced biochemical, proteomic, and high-throughput methods.
- Study protein dynamics and mitochondrial functionality during ageing.
- Work in a collaborative, international, and inclusive environment.
Umea University Postdoc Scholarship Benefits
Selected fellows will receive an 8-month, full-time scholarship that supports advanced research in a cutting-edge scientific field. Beyond financial support, fellows will access:
- State-of-the-art lab facilities.
- Mentorship and collaborative opportunities.
- A stimulating environment promoting innovation and independence in research.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify, applicants must:
- Hold a doctoral degree (or foreign equivalent) in Biochemistry, Molecular or Cellular Biology, Biotechnology, or a related field.
- Have completed their PhD within the last three (03) years (exceptions may apply for illness, parental leave, or similar circumstances).
- Demonstrate a strong research background with first-author peer-reviewed publications.
- Possess skills in protein biochemistry and cell/molecular biology methods.
Additional Merits
- Prior experience with mitochondria and PQC studies.
- Familiarity with S. cerevisiae as a research model.
- Skills in high-throughput screening, flow cytometry, or advanced molecular cloning techniques.
