Rolls-Royce-Linked PhD Scholarship at Manchester 2027: Application Process Explained
Two funded PhD projects at the University of Manchester offer research with Rolls-Royce, including a titanium-alloy project recruiting for October 2027. Before you start polishing your application, check the funding restriction: the titanium vacancy is advertised for UK students only, while the aerospace fuel-pump project explicitly requires Home fee eligibility.
If you qualify, your next task is choosing the research problem you can make a convincing case to tackle. Here is how the projects differ, what the funding covers and how to move from interest to a complete application.
Can you qualify if you live outside the UK?
These two vacancies do not offer unrestricted funding for international applicants. Academic suitability and funding eligibility are separate decisions. A strong engineering degree alone does not establish eligibility for the advertised studentship.
For the fuel-pump project, the decisive condition is eligibility to pay Home tuition fees. Manchester assesses fee status using your application information and may request supporting documents. Its assessment is independent of decisions made by other institutions or funding bodies.
If your circumstances are unusual, ask admissions about the funding restriction before committing substantial time. Manchester cannot formally assess your fee status before receiving a study application. For the titanium project, also ask the CDT team to clarify the advert’s “UK students only” condition in your circumstances.
Which Rolls-Royce-linked project fits your background?
Choose titanium failure investigation if your interests centre on materials and digital analysis; consider cryogenic motors if they centre on electrical machines and aerospace propulsion. Use your dissertation, laboratory work or technical projects to explain that match.
| Project | Research focus | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| Development of Digital Failure Investigation Tools for Titanium Alloys | Linking fracture-surface microscopy with microstructure and loading conditions; includes extensive time at Rolls-Royce. | Materials 4.0 CDT, October 2027 cohort; advertised deadline 8 January 2027. |
| EPSRC – Cryogenic Fuel Pump Motors for Aerospace | Studying materials at cryogenic temperatures and developing a prototype aerospace fuel-pump motor with Rolls-Royce. | 3.5-year project; flexible start, ideally as soon as possible. |
The fuel-pump advert asks for at least a 2:1 honours degree or a master’s in a relevant science or engineering discipline. Electrical machines and drives experience is particularly desirable. Its flexible start means you should discuss your availability rather than assume it belongs to the October 2027 cohort.
Does “fully funded” mean the same package for both projects?
Both adverts include tuition support and a tax-free stipend, but the quoted amounts and additional support must be read project by project. The titanium studentship covers Home fees, a stipend of at least £21,805 and a research training support grant. The fuel-pump award covers tuition and quotes £21,805 annually for 2026/27.
Treat those figures as the advertised funding information. The fuel-pump advert expects annual stipend increases, but it does not specify the future amount. Neither advert establishes a separate package for dependants, relocation or visa costs.
How do you turn interest into a Manchester application?
Apply through the university’s postgraduate research system for the named project. A FindAPhD enquiry can help you clarify suitability; it does not replace the university application.
- Recheck the vacancy. Read the Materials 4.0 recruitment page for titanium or the Manchester fuel-pump project advert for the rolling vacancy.
- Contact the relevant team. Titanium enquiries can go to [email protected] or supervisor Alec Davis at [email protected]. The fuel-pump advert recommends contacting Dr Sinisa Durovic before applying. Explain your academic preparation, relevant experience and motivation.
- Prepare evidence of research readiness. For the fuel-pump application, the advert requests transcripts, qualification certificates, a CV, a one- or two-page supporting statement and contact details for two referees. Follow the titanium programme’s own document instructions. For optional help presenting research evidence, our CV guidance on tailoring academic experience offers useful principles; Manchester’s requested format takes priority.
- Submit through the Manchester postgraduate application portal. For titanium, select Postgraduate Research, academic year 2027/28 and CDT in Materials 4.0. For fuel-pump, identify the full project title and supervisor and follow the advert’s application instructions. No Doctoral Academy application fee is charged.
- Prepare for the next stage. The Materials 4.0 CDT shortlists after its deadlines and uses an online interview, including a five-minute presentation about previous research. Practice explaining your individual contribution, methods and findings.
Which deadline should you work towards?
Use the project’s advertised deadline rather than assuming every CDT recruitment round applies to your chosen vacancy. Materials 4.0 lists wider recruitment rounds on 8 January, 5 March and 14 May 2027, but the titanium advert specifically names the January deadline. Do not rely on a later round unless the team confirms availability.
