Rotary Yoneyama Scholarship 2027 Opens for Japan Degrees—Up to ¥140,000 Monthly
The Rotary Yoneyama Memorial Scholarship is open for international applicants entering Japanese universities in April, September or October 2027. Already passed JLPT test and planning your degree in Japan? This opportunity can help with monthly expenses from your first year, but you must arrange university admission yourself.
Start with two checks: your Japanese-language result and your admission timetable. An English-taught course does not remove the scholarship’s Japanese requirement, and winning funding does not secure a university place.

Who can use this overseas route?
This route is for prospective degree students living abroad, rather than applicants seeking a language-school or non-degree research placement. You must be under 45 on 1 April 2027, meaning born on or after 2 April 1982. Former Yoneyama scholars cannot apply again.
Previous travel to Japan does not automatically exclude you: the rules allow stays totaling up to 365 days before 1 October 2026, with additional exceptions for certain childhood family stays and Rotary Youth Exchange alumni. Check your actual history before ruling yourself out.
N3 is the minimum; N2 or higher is encouraged. The reason is practical: recipients attend their designated Rotary club at least monthly, give speeches and submit Japanese-language reports twice yearly. Think about whether you can participate comfortably alongside your studies.
What should you budget beyond the stipend?
The published package provides a stipend and travel support, without promising a separate tuition waiver. Compare your university’s tuition, accommodation and initial expenses against the award before deciding that Japan is affordable.
Travel support requires receipts after arrival, so plan to pay upfront. The programme also connects scholars with a supporting club and counselor: participation and personal relationships are part of the award.
University tuition and admission-fee waivers can coexist with Yoneyama funding. Other scholarships generally cannot; check compatibility before accepting overlapping awards.
How do you submit a complete application?
Apply separately for university admission and the overseas scholarship. Work through these steps:
- Choose your institution and entry month. Use the official overseas-candidates page to download the forms. Check your university’s admission requirements and fees.
- Check the admission evidence. Read the 2027 application guide. Pending admission is permitted. If university applications have not opened, state the examination schedule and submit application evidence within two weeks after that university’s application deadline.
- Prepare your documents. Assemble the signed application with photograph, study/research plan, essay, signed recommendation, JLPT result and admission evidence. Without an acceptance letter, provide the required university application/examination evidence and admission guidelines, subject to the permitted timing exception.
- Arrange the right referee. Graduate applicants normally need their prospective Japanese supervisor; an alternative is allowed when the advisor is assigned only after enrollment. Write the plan and essay yourself: generative AI is prohibited for both.
- Register and upload. Submit through the dedicated scholarship portal. Keep your emailed receipt number and monitor follow-up requests.
Which dates belong in your calendar?
The last date to apply for the Rotary Yoneyama Memorial Scholarship for Overseas Candidates is 31 October 2026 at 13:00 JST. Applications opened on 1 October 2026; both 2027 intake seasons share this deadline. Results are expected by mid-March 2027.
University admission deadlines are separate. Final acceptance evidence is due by 25 March 2027 for April entry or 25 August 2027 for September/October entry. Successful scholars must arrive by the end of the month before enrollment and attend orientation. Start your admission and travel planning alongside the scholarship application.
