This is not just another short course — it is a rare European Parliament-backed platform designed to strengthen the voices of those working on the frontlines of justice, freedom, dignity, and human rights. For many applicants, it represents a fully supported pathway to gain high-level training, international visibility, and lifelong connections within the EU human rights community.

Unlike prize awards, the Sakharov Fellowship is about building your capacity to create real change, equipping defenders with tools, networks, and influence that extend far beyond the programme itself.

What the Sakharov Fellowship 2026 Offers Selected Fellows?

Winning the Sakharov Fellowship is an empowering career-defining moment for human rights practitioners. Up to 14 fellows will be selected to participate in a two-week immersive programme held in Brussels and another location within an EU Member State.

This fellowship delivers direct exposure to European Parliament human rights work, alongside practical training that strengthens advocacy and safety for defenders worldwide. Fellows will engage with Members of Parliament, EU officials, and leading Brussels-based human rights experts while developing advanced skills in modern campaigning and resilience.

Benefits and Full Fellowship Coverage

The Sakharov Fellowship is fully funded, ensuring that selected defenders can participate without financial barriers. The programme provides complete support so fellows can focus entirely on learning, networking, and advocacy.

Its benefits include:

  1. Return travel from the fellow’s country of residence
  2. Full accommodation during the two-week programme
  3. A daily living allowance for the duration of the fellowship
  4. Intensive training in communication, advocacy, safety, and documentation
  5. Direct meetings with European Parliament members and EU institutions
  6. Access to the Sakharov Community network for long-term engagement

This is a unique chance to gain high-impact skills while joining one of Europe’s most respected human rights defender communities.

Can You Apply?

The Sakharov Fellowship is designed for committed human rights defenders from outside the European Union. Applicants must demonstrate both experience and readiness to actively contribute to the programme.

To qualify, candidates must:

  1. Be a human rights defender from a non-EU country
  2. Have a proven record of campaigning for human rights
  3. Work through an NGO, organisation, or as an independent advocate
  4. Possess a high level of English to participate fully
  5. Be able to contribute actively in workshops and discussions
  6. Represent diverse human rights themes and geographical areas
  7. Support gender balance and inclusion within the fellowship cohort

This fellowship seeks defenders who are ready to amplify their impact globally.
