Eligibility Criteria – Who Can Apply?
The Takeda Science Foundation Fellowship has two grant categories:
Grant (I) – Targeting Applicants from Seven Designated Countries

- Open to medical doctors and researchers from Taiwan, Thailand, the Philippines, Korea, China, Indonesia, and Vietnam.
- Requires an MD or PhD in medical or life sciences.
- The application process is handled through selection committees in the respective countries.
Grant (II) – Open to International Applicants Beyond the Seven Countries

- Foreign medical doctors (MDs) and researchers (PhDs) from countries other than the designated seven.
- Requires a Japan-residing mentor doctor to initiate the application process.
- Applicants already residing in Japan at the time of application are not eligible.
- Graduate students are ineligible.
- Income Cap Restriction: Applicants must not have an annual income of JPY 6,000,000 or more after April 1, 2026.
- Cannot combine this fellowship with JSPS grants exceeding JPY 200,000 per month.
Grant Duration
The fellowship offers flexible durations depending on research and training requirements:
- Grant (I): 3, 6, 12, or 24 months.
- Grant (II): Research: 6 to 24 months, Clinical Training: 3 to 12 months.
