Eligibility Criteria – Who Can Apply?

The Takeda Science Foundation Fellowship has two grant categories:

Grant (I) – Targeting Applicants from Seven Designated Countries

    • Open to medical doctors and researchers from Taiwan, Thailand, the Philippines, Korea, China, Indonesia, and Vietnam.
    • Requires an MD or PhD in medical or life sciences.
    • The application process is handled through selection committees in the respective countries.

Grant (II) – Open to International Applicants Beyond the Seven Countries

    • Foreign medical doctors (MDs) and researchers (PhDs) from countries other than the designated seven.
    • Requires a Japan-residing mentor doctor to initiate the application process.
    • Applicants already residing in Japan at the time of application are not eligible.
    • Graduate students are ineligible.
    • Income Cap Restriction: Applicants must not have an annual income of JPY 6,000,000 or more after April 1, 2026.
    • Cannot combine this fellowship with JSPS grants exceeding JPY 200,000 per month.

Grant Duration

The fellowship offers flexible durations depending on research and training requirements:

  • Grant (I): 3, 6, 12, or 24 months.
  • Grant (II): Research: 6 to 24 months, Clinical Training: 3 to 12 months.

The application period for the 2026 Takeda Science Foundation fellowship is set as follows:

  • Start Date: April 1, 2025
  • Deadline: July 18, 2025 (all applications must be received by this date)
  • Fellowship Period: April 1, 2026 – January 31, 2027.
