New Highlights from the 2025 STEM Work Visa Policy Update

Following 2 major updates are made to counter US STEM professional shortages in 2025:

1# Nonimmigrant (Temporary) Pathways: For Working in the U.S. Short-Term

    • F-1 Optional Practical Training (OPT) + STEM OPT Extension
      International students graduating from U.S. universities in STEM fields can work for up to 36 months without needing a job offer for the first 12 months.

    • H-1B Specialty Occupations Visa
      Professionals with at least a bachelor’s degree can be sponsored for employment in high-skill sectors. Initial approvals are valid for 3 years, extendable to 6 years. Extensions beyond 6 years are possible for green card applicants.

    • O-1 Visa for Individuals of Extraordinary Ability
      Designed for professionals with recognized national or international achievements. No numerical limit and indefinite extensions make this a highly flexible option.

    • J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa (STEM Focus)
      Provides up to 5 years of work authorization for STEM professionals participating in Department of State-approved exchange programs.

    • L-1A and L-1B Intracompany Transfer Visas
      Allows multinational firms to transfer executives or skilled workers to their U.S. offices. Valid for 5–7 years depending on the category.

    • TN Visa under USMCA (for Canadians and Mexicans)
      No annual cap and unlimited renewals for eligible STEM professionals in approved roles.


2# Immigrant (Permanent) Pathways: For Those Seeking Green Cards

    • EB-1A – Extraordinary Ability
      Allows self-petitioning with no job offer or labor certification required. Ideal for innovators and leaders in STEM fields.

      Requires international recognition and a job offer, but no labor certification.

    • EB-2 with or without National Interest Waiver (NIW)
