UK Deterrence Futures Fellowship 2025

The UK Nuclear Deterrence Network has officially opened applications for its inaugural Deterrence Futures Fellowship — an exciting 18-month development program crafted for early- to mid-career professionals with a strong interest in global security, deterrence theory, and policy development.

About the Fellowship

This prestigious fellowship aims to empower a cohort of thinkers and practitioners from NATO member states to critically engage with the evolving concept and practice of deterrence in the UK and global context. If you’re passionate about strategic security, international policy, and nuclear deterrence, this is your chance to join a cutting-edge intellectual network.

Fellows will delve into key themes including:

  • Foundations of UK and Allied nuclear deterrence
  • Emerging and disruptive technologies in integrated deterrence
  • Nuclear policy, disarmament, and escalation management
  • The geopolitical rise of China and Russia in the nuclear order
  • Strategic communications in deterrence strategy

The program also offers real-world experiences through in-person meetings, site visits, and scenario-based exercises, all while receiving professional development support and engaging with leading global experts and senior officials.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be a citizen of a NATO member state
  • Have 3–7 years of professional or academic experience in relevant fields
    (e.g., academia, government, armed forces, think tanks, private sector, or NGOs)
  • Be based in the UK or another European NATO member state
  • Be committed to fostering inclusive, respectful discourse on deterrence policy
  • Have a keen interest in security, strategic studies, and nuclear deterrence.
