United Nations Townhall Young Youth Fellowship 2026 Seeking Applicants
Young people who have never had the chance to enter a major United Nations policy space may have an unusually good reason to apply for the 2026 UN Youth Townhall in Heidelberg, Germany.
The UN Youth Office has opened a call to support a limited number of young people aged 18–35 to attend the first-ever Townhall in person from December 8–10, 2026. Who Has the Strongest Chance of Selection?
This is one UN opportunity where having an impressive history of attending international conferences may not necessarily give you the advantage.
The UN Youth Office specifically says preference will be given to applicants involved in grassroots organizations who have had limited or no previous engagement with the United Nations.
Selection will also consider geographical representation, gender balance and inclusion of young people from underrepresented and marginalized communities.
Applicants currently working under a UN contract cannot receive sponsorship through this youth call.
What Will Participants Actually Do?
The Townhall is intended to go beyond speeches and networking.
Participants will take part in discussions designed to generate recommendations, partnerships and practical actions around meaningful youth participation. The programme is expected to include roundtables, fireside conversations, smaller discussions and exchanges between young people and decision-makers.
The gathering forms part of the UN Youth Compass, an initiative intended to strengthen meaningful youth participation across the UN system rather than treating young people as symbolic participants.
How to Apply for Sponsored Participation
The application takes approximately 30–45 minutes and is completed online and the applicants should be ready to:
- provide nationality, residence and personal information;
- identify whether they represent a youth-led organization, youth-serving organization or apply individually;
- explain their organisation or community involvement where applicable;
- confirm working knowledge of English;
- identify interpretation requirements if needed;
- disclose accessibility or reasonable-accommodation needs;
- and explain any safety requirements relevant to their participation.
Before submitting, applicants should read the official UN application guidance rather than treating the form like a routine conference registration.
What Should You Emphasize in Your Application?
Do not spend the application trying to sound like an experienced UN diplomat.
A stronger approach is to show what problem you are already working on locally, whose voices you represent, what practical experience you would bring to Heidelberg and how you would use the Townhall after returning home.
That aligns much more closely with the UN’s stated goal of widening participation among young people who are often excluded from international decision-making spaces.
