Are you a passionate MSc graduate ready to dive into cutting-edge research at the crossroads of machine learning, molecular modeling, and drug discovery? The University of Amsterdam (UvA), through its AI for Chemistry group led by Dr. Bernd Ensing, is inviting applications for its prestigious PhD Scholarship in Machine Learning and Molecular Modelling of Drug Design. This unique research opportunity is part of the Vascular Immunology Consortium, a dynamic initiative blending life sciences and medicine, and offering three interdisciplinary PhD positions.

Funding Package: What You’ll Receive

  • Monthly Salary: €3,059 in the first year, rising to €3,881 by the fourth year (Scale P, full-time 38 hours/week)
  • Contract Duration: 4 years (18-month initial contract with extension upon satisfactory performance)
  • Holiday Bonus: 8%
  • Year-End Bonus: 8.3%
  • Paid Leaves: 232 vacation hours per year, plus paid parental and partner leave
  • Pension: Generous ABP pension contribution
  • Relocation Support: Daycare, schooling, insurance, and partner employment assistance via IDCN-network
  • Career Development: PhD courses, soft skills training, and Dutch language classes
  • Workspace: Located at Science Park Amsterdam in the Computational Chemistry Group, Van ‘t Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS).

Research Focus

The research will center around developing geometric learning, generative AI, and reinforcement learning techniques to generate and optimize drug candidates. Your mission will be to:

  • Build graph neural networks for structure-property prediction.
  • Use diffusion models to generate new drug molecules.
  • Apply simulations to refine molecules for optimal protein-binding.
  • Work closely with AI4Science Laboratory, HIMS, and experimental partners in Life Sciences and Medicine faculties.

Who Can Apply?

  • Hold a recent Master’s degree in AI (with a focus on natural sciences) OR MSc in Chemistry, Physics, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or Chemical Engineering with ML experience.
  • Experience with geometric ML, biomolecular simulations, or molecular modeling is preferred.
  • Strong programming skills and excellent command of English.
  • Enthusiastic, self-motivated, and ready to collaborate in an interdisciplinary environment.

Application Timeline

The last date to apply for the University of Amsterdam PhD Scholarship in Machine Learning and Molecular Modelling of Drug Design is August 23, 2025. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews in August and September 2025, with the project commencing between September 2025 and February 2026.
