University of British Columbia Affiliated Fellowships 2025 Open

The University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies has opened its prestigious Affiliated Fellowships Doctoral competition for the 2026 / 27 academic year. Roughly 50 fellowships are awarded annually across all disciplines to help outstanding scholars pursue full-time doctoral research at UBC—no matter their citizenship or visa status.

Benefits at a Glance

UBC tailors each award to the scholar’s funding needs:

  • Award value: from CA $175 up to CA $40,000 (most awards hover around CA $16,000).
  • Flexibility: recipients may simultaneously hold UBC RA/TA positions, donor-funded awards, and even Four-Year Fellowships (4YF), with Affiliated funding topping up or replacing existing support where appropriate.
  • Killam Doctoral Scholarship: the very best candidates meeting additional Killam criteria will receive this elite top-up within the same competition.

Priority goes to applicants who do not already hold major external scholarships worth CA $16,000 + for the 2026 / 27 year.

Who Is Eligible?

  • Degree level: full-time doctoral (PhD, DMA, EdD, etc.) students—both current and prospective—who will register at UBC in September 2026.
  • Citizenship: open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and international students.
  • Academic calibre: candidates must satisfy all eligibility rules of the federal Canada Graduate Scholarships-Doctoral (CGS-D) program, whose rigorous criteria (research potential, academic excellence, leadership) guide the Affiliated evaluation as well.

Programs & Award Streams

There is one common application that makes you automatically eligible for:

  1. Open/Unrestricted Awards – available to doctoral students in any field.
  2. Criteria-Based Awards – endowed fellowships linked to a specific discipline, demographic, or research theme.
