The University of Greifswald, one of Germany’s oldest and most respected research institutions, has opened applications for a Research Associate position (General and Systematic Zoology 25/Wi27) for the class of 2026.
This position is a three (03) year fellowship-style research role, starting on 1 February 2026, and offers young scientists worldwide the chance to dive deep into cutting-edge behavioral and chemical ecology research on the infamous Mediterranean black widow spider (Latrodectus tredecimguttatus).

Under the mentorship of Dr. Fischer and Prof. Uhl, you’ll work alongside national and international experts in mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, and chemical synthesis, with access to world-class facilities and a highly collaborative research environment.
Scholar’s Responsibilities
As a selected fellow, you’ll:
- Conduct behavioral ecology experiments with spiders.
- Apply LC/MS- and GC/MS-based metabolomics to study pheromonal communication.
- Analyze and interpret scientific data.
- Maintain animal colonies and manage laboratory work.
- Prepare scientific publications and contribute to international research.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Biology, Chemistry, or related fields by the time of employment.
Required skills:

- Strong interest in behavioral and chemical ecology.
- Proficiency in written and spoken English (lab working language).
Preferred skills (not mandatory):

- Experience with analytical chemistry tools (LC/MS, GC/MS).
- Prior work in animal husbandry and behavioral experiments.
