The University of Malta is now accepting applications for a fully-funded M.Sc. by Research position in collaboration with the Department of Geosciences, Faculty of Science. This unique opportunity is tied to the exciting research project titled “Investigating Malta’s Recent Seismic Activity and Development of Novel Tools for Earthquake Analysis”, led by Dr Matthew Agius.
Project Overview
The selected Master’s student will play a pivotal role in:
- Updating Malta’s earthquake catalogue (2015–2024) using Malta Seismic Network data.
- Gaining hands-on training with earthquake analysis tools like SeisComP and ISOLA.
- Working closely with a distinguished supervisory team and contributing to cutting-edge geoscientific research.
Scholarship Benefits
- Stipend: €500/month for one full year
- Tuition fee waiver (local candidates): Up to €400 covered for the first year
- Non-EU/EEA candidates: Can apply for tuition fee waivers up to 100% based on merit
- Duration: One year, full-time starting September 2025
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Meet the Master of Science in Geosciences admission criteria per University of Malta (UM) regulations.
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Geosciences, Physics, Earth Systems, Maths, Statistics, or related science/IT fields.
- Show proficiency in programming (preferred).
- Final-year undergraduates may apply conditionally.
- International applicants must:
- Submit a recognized English language proficiency certificate.
- Provide proof of financial means (as the stipend will not cover all living/study expenses).
