University of Minnesota Fellowship ISRDI 2025 Open

The Institute for Social Research and Data Innovation (ISRDI) at the University of Minnesota has launched the Summer Diversity Fellowship 2025, a prestigious opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students interested in demographic research and data infrastructure projects. This fellowship is designed to support students from systemically underrepresented groups by providing them with hands-on experience in data analysis, research methodology, and technical documentation.

About the Fellowship

The Summer Diversity Fellowship provides students with the chance to work directly with faculty and research staff on various projects related to social research and data innovation. The program is aimed at building a diverse pipeline of future researchers and analysts, equipping them with critical skills in data science and social research methodologies. Fellows will contribute to ongoing projects such as:

  • Documenting Geography Variables in the IPUMS USA Full Count datasets
  • Developing a Bioinformatic Data Lineage and Meta-data Tracking System
  • Analyzing Racial Socialization Messages in ethnically diverse Black families
  • Using Machine Learning to identify key social determinants of educational attainment
  • Evaluating Causal Discovery Algorithms.

Stipend & Work Details

  • Undergraduate Fellows: $16.03/hr for 8 weeks (20 hours per week)
  • Graduate Fellows: $27.45/hr for 10 weeks (20 hours per week)
  • Work Location: Hybrid or fully on-site at 50 Willey Hall, Minneapolis, MN
  • Mandatory In-Person Participation in workshops and cohort meetings.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program
  • Be authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Have excellent communication, computer, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate reliability, attention to detail, and ability to work in a diverse team
  • Be eager to learn new technologies and research methods.

Preference is given to students who self-identify as part of underrepresented groups, including African American, American Indian, Hispanic/Latino/a, Asian American, first-generation students, women in tech fields, LGBTQIA+ students, and students with disabilities.
