Internship Details

Program Type: Paid
Locations: U.S. Embassies and consulates worldwide, Washington, D.C., and other U.S. locations
Application Period: The Summer 2025 application window will open in October 2024.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible, you must:

  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.2
  • Be able to obtain a Public Trust, Secret, or Top Secret clearance
  • Be an undergraduate (junior or senior) or graduate student enrolled in an accredited college or university
  • Plan to return to school immediately after the internship
  • Attach an official or unofficial transcript to your application

Compensation and Benefits

Interns receive a GS-04/Step 1 base pay and are considered temporary employees of the U.S. Department of State. The program covers reasonable travel expenses and assists with housing. Note that the internship is not creditable for retirement benefits unless you secure a federal career position afterward.

Internship Assignments

Assignments vary widely but can include:

  • Participating in meetings with senior U.S. or foreign government officials
  • Drafting, editing, or contributing to policy materials
  • Supporting international meetings and conferences
  • Engaging with U.S. and foreign audiences to promote U.S. foreign policy
