September 2025 Intake Leiden University Excellence Scholarship

Leiden University is offering the prestigious Leiden University Excellence Scholarship (LExS) for exceptional international students aiming to pursue a full-time Master’s degree programme in September 2025. Renowned for its academic excellence, this scholarship offers financial support to students with outstanding academic records who are set to make a global impact. Overview of the LExS

The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship is open to excellent students enrolling in most Master’s programmes at Leiden University. However, it is important to note that certain programmes are not eligible, including:

  • All Humanities programmes
  • LLM (non-advanced) and MSc programmes at Leiden Law School

The scholarship is particularly targeted at non-EEA/non-EFTA students, with some exceptions for all nationalities applying for Advanced LLMs and the MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy.

  • Countries/Nationalities: Non-EEA/non-EFTA students, with specific exceptions

Eligibility Criteria

1# Programme Requirements: Applicants must be enrolling in a Leiden University Master’s programme starting in September, excluding specific programmes such as Humanities and non-advanced LLM/MSc courses at Leiden Law School.

2# Nationality Requirements: Applicants should have a non-EEA/non-EFTA passport and not be eligible for Dutch government student finance (Studiefinanciering). Exceptions are made for Advanced LLM programmes and the MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy.

3# Academic Excellence: Applicants must demonstrate excellent academic results from previous studies, typically ranking in the top 10% of their graduating class. Proof of ranking is not required but serves as an indicator of competitiveness.

Scholarship Awards and Amounts

The LExS is a partial scholarship and does not cover the full cost of studies. It offers five award levels:

  • €10,000, €15,000, €17,500, €18,500, or €19,000 of the tuition fee. The level of the award is final, non-negotiable, and requires a significant personal contribution from the recipient.

Application Process

  1. Apply for Admission: Submit your application for admission to a Master’s programme at Leiden University here https://www.universiteitleiden.nl/en/scholarships/sea/leiden-university-excellence-scholarship-lexs.
  2. Scholarship Application: Once your application is submitted, return to the “Apply” screen and access the Scholarships section. If eligible, the LExS will be visible for application.
  3. Motivation Letter: Upload a motivation letter (max. 500 words) explaining why you should be considered for the LExS.
  4. Submission: Ensure all applications and documents are submitted before the deadline. Late applications will not be considered.

Application Deadline: February 1, 2025, for programmes starting in September 2025.
