What is the James Madison Fellowship?

The James Madison Fellowship Program is dedicated to strengthening teaching about the U.S. Constitution in American secondary schools. It provides up to $24,000 in financial assistance for master’s level graduate study to individuals who plan to teach or are already teaching American history, government, or civics in grades 7–12.

Financial Support & Conditions

Each award provides up to $24,000, prorated based on the program’s duration:

  • Maximum $12,000 per year
  • Covers tuition, required books, fees, and room and board (if needed for study away from home)

Note: Fellows who fail to meet the teaching commitment, complete the program, or attend the Summer Institute will be required to repay the funds.


Who is Eligible?

To be eligible for the James Madison Graduate Fellowship 2026, applicants must be U.S. citizens and either current teachers or individuals planning to become teachers of American history, civics, or government at the secondary school level (grades 7–12).

They must hold a bachelor’s degree or be on track to complete it no later than August 31, 2026. In return for the fellowship support, recipients are required to teach a qualifying subject for one full academic year for each year of funding received. It’s important to note that applicants only compete against others from their state of legal residence, making the selection process state-specific.


Fellowship Types

There are two main categories of fellowships:

  • Junior Fellowships – For college seniors or recent graduates with no teaching experience. Must complete the master’s degree within two years (full-time study).
  • Senior Fellowships – For current secondary school teachers. Can complete the degree part-time over five years.

A specially funded fellowship, the Admiral Paul A. Yost, Jr.–James Madison Fellowship, is also available exclusively to applicants who have served honorably in the U.S. military.


Approved Degree Programs

Fellows may pursue their master’s degree at any accredited U.S. university, provided the program includes at least 12 semester credits in constitutional study. Approved degrees include:

  • MA in American history, political science, or government
  • MAT with a concentration in Constitutional studies
  • MEd or MS/MA in Education with a constitutional focus

A highlight of the program is the Summer Institute on the U.S. Constitution—a rigorous, six-credit graduate course held in Washington, D.C., bringing together Fellows for four weeks of intensive study and discussion.
