What Is the GHES Fellowship?
The GHES Fellowship is a prestigious, fully funded 12-month program supported by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) through the Fogarty International Center. The program prepares new generations of health researchers and professionals to tackle emerging global public health challenges through international collaboration and mentorship.
GHES is managed by a powerful consortium of U.S. institutions: Yale University, Stanford University, University of Arizona, and UC Berkeley.
Fellows will gain hands-on research and practice experience at one of 16 approved partner institutions located across Africa, Latin America, South and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Oceania.

Who Can Apply?
GHES welcomes diverse applicants from the U.S. and partner LMICs:
For U.S. Postdoctoral Applicants
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Affiliated with any U.S. academic institution
- Completed a doctoral degree within the past 5 years or by May 2026
- Must secure U.S. and LMIC mentor endorsements
- Applicants from outside the core consortium (Yale, UC Berkeley, Stanford, Arizona) must seek approval before applying.
For LMIC Postdoctoral Applicants
- Must be a citizen of a World Bank-designated low- or middle-income country
- Must be affiliated with a GHES LMIC partner institution
- Completed a doctoral degree within the past 5 years or by May 2026
- Doctoral degrees such as PhD, MBBS, MBChB, MMed are eligible
For U.S. Predoctoral Students
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Must be an advanced doctoral candidate (PhD, MD, DDS, DrPH, DVM, PharmD, etc.)
- Must be enrolled at Yale, UC Berkeley, Stanford, or Arizona—or have secured affiliation as a visiting student
- Should have completed at least 3 years of doctoral education or passed qualifying exams
Research Opportunities Across the Globe
Selected fellows will conduct research in countries like Bangladesh, India, Nicaragua, Tanzania, Ecuador, and more. Topics range from maternal and child health, HIV prevention, air pollution, infectious disease, and virology to environmental determinants of health.
