Apply for Fully Funded Commonwealth PhD Scholarship 2027 at Sussex University

If you are from a low-income Commonwealth country and want to begin a fully funded PhD in the UK in September 2027, the University of Sussex is accepting candidates for the Commonwealth PhD Scholarships 2027.

This is one of the stronger UK doctoral funding routes because the award is not limited to tuition. It covers full overseas PhD fees, a living stipend, return travel to the UK, research-training support and eligible fieldwork costs.

But there is a catch applicants often miss: you do not simply apply to Sussex and wait for a scholarship decision. You need a Sussex PhD application, a supervisor who supports your project, a Commonwealth Scholarship Commission application, and nomination through an approved nominating agency.

Who Is This Scholarship Actually For?

The Sussex call is specifically for Commonwealth PhD Scholarships aimed at least developed countries and fragile states. Applicants must be citizens of, or hold refugee status in, an eligible country and must also be permanently resident there.

The eligibility list published by Sussex includes countries such as Bangladesh, The Gambia, Kiribati, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Pakistan, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Togo, Tuvalu, Uganda and Zambia.

The Sussex page also shows a second country list elsewhere on the same page that includes some additional countries such as Cameroon, Kenya and Vanuatu. Because those two lists are not identical, applicants should verify their country against the current Commonwealth Scholarship Commission eligibility list before relying only on the Sussex summary.

What Academic Background Do You Need?

You should normally hold at least a UK upper-second-class equivalent degree, or a lower second-class degree together with an appropriate postgraduate qualification such as a Master’s degree. You must also be ready to begin your studies in the UK in September or October 2027.

Another important restriction is that you must not already be registered for a PhD, or an MPhil leading to a PhD, at a UK university before the 2027 academic year begins.

The commonwealth Sussex university scholarship is also needs-based in principle: applicants must be unable to afford UK doctoral study without the scholarship.

What Does the Commonwealth PhD Scholarship Cover?

This is a genuine full-funding package rather than a partial tuition discount and at Sussex, the award is described as covering:

  • Full international PhD tuition fees
  • A living stipend
  • Return travel to the UK
  • Research Training Support Grant
  • Eligible fieldwork costs

The precise stipend and allowance rates are governed by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, so applicants should use the final CSC award terms rather than assume a figure from a previous year.

What Kind of PhD Research Can You Propose?

Applications must fit one of six Commonwealth development themes:

  1. Science and technology for development
  2. Strengthening health systems and capacity
  3. Promoting global prosperity
  4. Strengthening global peace, security and governance
  5. Strengthening resilience and response to crises
  6. Access, inclusion and opportunity

The strongest projects will not simply mention one of these themes in passing. Your proposal should show a clear connection between your research, a real development problem, and the impact you expect the work to create in your home country.

That matters because Commonwealth selection considers not only academic quality, but also the development impact of the proposed research.

Do You Need a Sussex Supervisor Before Applying?

Yes, and this is one of the most important practical steps. You need to be in contact with a potential Sussex supervisor who can support your application and provide a signed supervisor statement.

That statement must be uploaded with your Commonwealth Scholarship application.

So although Sussex does not give one separate institutional PhD application deadline here, waiting until October to contact a supervisor would be risky. Supervisors need time to read your proposal, decide whether they can support it and prepare the required statement.

How Does the Commonwealth Application Process Work?

There are effectively three connected parts.

First, submit a formal PhD application to the University of Sussex. Sussex asks for documents including your CV, degree certificates and transcripts, statement of interest, names of two academic referees and a valid IELTS certificate where required.

Second, submit the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission application through the CSC online system.

Third, apply through an approved nominating agency, normally the national nominating body in your home country. Some universities and NGOs can also nominate candidates. This third step is easy to underestimate because nominating agencies set their own deadlines, which may be earlier than the CSC deadline.

What Should Your Development Impact Statement Explain?

The CSC application requires a Development Impact Statement linking your proposed PhD to development at global, national and local levels. A weak statement says the research “will help my country.”

A stronger one explains exactly what problem exists, who is affected, how the PhD research addresses it, what knowledge or skills you will gain in the UK, and how you plan to apply those skills after returning home.

That development case is central to the logic of the Commonwealth scholarship.

Commonwealth PhD Scholarship 2027 Deadline

The main CSC application deadline is 20 October 2026 at 4:00 PM GMT. Your Sussex supervisor statement and complete academic documentation should be ready before that point.

However, your national or other nominating agency may impose an earlier deadline, so October 20 should not automatically be treated as your personal final date. Nominating bodies are expected to forward their selections later in 2026, after which the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission considers nominated candidates.

What Happens After Nomination?

Candidates are assessed on three broad areas: academic merit, quality of the proposed study plan, and the potential development impact of the research in the applicant’s home country.

That balance is important. A brilliant academic proposal with little connection to development may be weaker than a similarly strong proposal that clearly demonstrates how the work can produce useful outcomes back home.

Questions International Applicants Usually Ask

Can Pakistani students apply for commonwealth scholarship?
Yes. Pakistan is included in the Sussex eligibility information for this scheme.

Can Indian students apply?
No. Sussex specifically states that India is not included in this Commonwealth PhD scheme.

Is the scholarship fully funded?
Yes. It covers full international tuition and also provides stipend, travel and research-related support.

Do I need admission to Sussex before applying to CSC?
You should apply to Sussex early and establish a relationship with a supervisor because the CSC application requires a supervisor statement.

Do I need IELTS for commonwealth scholarship?

The Commonwealth Scholarship itself does not set one IELTS score; you must meet the University of Sussex PhD English requirement for your chosen programme. For IELTS Academic, Sussex generally uses these levels:

  • Standard: 6.0 overall, minimum 6.0 in each component
  • High: 6.5 overall, minimum 6.0 in each component
  • Advanced: 7.0 overall, minimum 6.5 in each component

Sussex also accepts alternatives such as PTE Academic, Duolingo English Test, Cambridge C1/C2, Language Cert, Oxford ELLT and TOEFL iBT. For the commonly used High level, examples include PTE 62, Duolingo 120 and Cambridge 176. Always check the English requirement of the exact Sussex PhD course because some programmes require a higher level than others.

Can I already be doing a PhD in the UK?
No. Applicants must not already be registered for a UK PhD or MPhil leading to PhD before September/October 2027.

Should You Apply?

This scholarship is particularly strong for applicants who have a clear development-focused PhD idea, strong academic preparation and a realistic plan to use their research back in their home country.

The funding package is excellent, but the application is more demanding than a standard university scholarship because you are navigating Sussex admission, supervisor support, the CSC application and the nominating-agency process at the same time.

If your proposed research genuinely fits one of the six development themes, the best move is not to wait for October. Start with the Sussex supervisor and PhD application first, because without academic support from the university, the Commonwealth application becomes much harder to complete properly.
