Universität Hamburg Opens Merit Scholarships 2025 for International Students
Universität Hamburg is inviting outstanding international students from all disciplines and degree levels to apply for its fully-funded Merit Scholarship Program for the class of 2025. The award aims to help exceptional students focus fully on their studies by reducing financial burdens, enabling them to develop their academic and professional potential in one of Germany’s leading universities.
Funding Package
Selected recipients can receive up to €992 per month for a period of two consecutive semesters (12 months in total). The scholarship is renewable, with a maximum funding duration of two (02) years. Scholarships are paid on the first day of each month during the funding period, starting either 1 October 2025, depending on the application cycle.
Eligibility Criteria (Short Overview)
Applicants must:
- Have been enrolled in a degree program at Universität Hamburg for at least two semesters (or one completed semester for students in two-year master’s programs).
- Hold non-German citizenship.
- Not be eligible for the German federal student loan scheme (BAföG).
- Demonstrate strong academic performance and additional achievements (e.g., awards, publications, specialized skills).
Application Timeline
For the upcoming cycle, the deadlines are as follows:

15 October 2025 – Funding period from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027.
Important Notice: The October 2025 application round will be the last autumn intake. From 2026 onward, applications will only be accepted once a year, by 15 April, 2026.
Applicants must submit a complete online application (https://www.uni-hamburg.de/en/internationales/studierende/incoming/studium-mit-abschluss/waehrend-des-studiums/finanzierung/leistungsstipendien.html) with all required documents, including a CV, letter of motivation (template required), academic records, two faculty recommendations, and proof of residence in Germany. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.
