The Faculty of Music at the University of Oxford has unveiled an exceptional opportunity for aspiring musicologists through its new DPhil Scholarship in Schubert Studies, commencing in the 2026/27 academic year.
This Oxfordian University scholarship, made possible by the generosity of Dr Nigel Nettheim, invites doctoral candidates from around the world to pursue original research into the works of Franz Schubert (1797–1828). The program encourages analytical studies of Schubert’s compositions, as well as those of his contemporaries, circle, and musical influences, provided they contribute to a deeper understanding of his creative output.
The DPhil scholarship provides comprehensive financial support, covering full tuition fees at the home rate and a living grant of at least £22,027 per year for three years. It is open to all eligible applicants regardless of their initial college preference on the graduate application form, though successful recipients will be transferred to Wadham College for the duration of their scholarship.
Applications will follow Oxford’s central graduate admissions procedures, ensuring that all prospective candidates meet the University’s academic and research standards. Interested applicants can find full details of the application process and funding information on the official Oxford website: https://www.music.ox.ac.uk/article/new-dphil-scholarship-in-schubert-studies-2026/27-entry.
The deadline for applications is midday (UK time) on Wednesday, 7 January 2026. Early preparation is strongly advised due to the competitive nature of this doctoral opportunity. Prospective candidates seeking further academic guidance are encouraged to contact Professor Laura Tunbridge, Chair of the Faculty Board, at [email protected].
This scholarship marks a significant step forward in advancing global scholarship on Schubert and nineteenth-century music, reinforcing Oxford’s long-standing reputation as a leading center for music research and academic excellence.
