Mitacs Globalink Canada Research Internships 2027 Is Open: A Practical Guide for International Students

Canada’s Mitacs Globalink Research Internship 2027 is now accepting applications, giving eligible international undergraduate students an opportunity to spend 12 weeks working on a real research project at a Canadian university.

And one point should be cleared up immediately: this is not a conventional scholarship for studying a degree in Canada. It is a funded summer research internship. Selected students join a Canadian professor’s research team, work alongside graduate researchers and spend their summer gaining hands-on academic experience in Canada.

For students considering graduate school later, that difference matters. You are not going to Canada primarily to attend classes—you are going there to research.

Can You Apply From Your Country?

Only students studying in participating countries or regions can apply for the 2027 intake.

The current list includes Austria, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Jordan, Mexico, Pakistan, Peru, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Tunisia, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and the United States.

But finding your country on this list is only the first check.

Your university, degree level, grades and sometimes citizenship must also satisfy the rules assigned to your country. Some countries allow students from all universities, while others have a specific list of participating institutions. Minimum academic grades also vary considerably.

So do not judge your eligibility from somebody else’s successful application on Reddit or Facebook. Their country may be working under completely different rules.

Who Is Globalink 2027 Actually For?

The general rule is straightforward.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and studying full-time in an eligible undergraduate or combined undergraduate/master’s programme. Students should generally have completed at least two years of undergraduate study or meet the specific year requirement set for their country.

You must also normally have one to three semesters remaining in your programme in fall 2027.

This makes Globalink particularly suitable for students who are well into their undergraduate studies but have not yet reached graduation.

Master’s-only students should be careful: eligibility depends on the participating country, and the programme is primarily structured around undergraduate students.

Do You Need to Be a Science or Engineering Student?

Not necessarily. Globalink projects extend well beyond laboratory sciences.

Mitacs offers projects across science, engineering and mathematics, but also in humanities and social sciences. Many projects are interdisciplinary.

Your own country partner may, however, restrict the available disciplines. Indian applicants for 2027, for example, are currently limited to eligible B.E. and B.Tech students, whereas applicants from Pakistan can apply from all disciplines if they meet the other conditions.

The smartest way to search is therefore by your skills, not merely your degree title.

A computer science student might fit a health research project involving data analysis. An engineering student might find a sustainability project needing modelling skills.

What Does Mitacs Pay For?

Globalink provides financial support toward the major costs of completing the internship in Canada.

The 2027 funding package can contribute toward:

• round-trip airfare to Canada;
• transportation from the Canadian airport to accommodation;
• housing;
• food and incidental expenses;
• student enrolment fees at the host institution; and
• emergency health insurance.

Interns also receive access to professional-development activities and support from student mentors in Canada. The actual funding amount can vary according to the applicant’s country, international partner and host institution.

The internship normally runs for 12 consecutive weeks between May and October 2027, with the permitted starting period running from May 1 through July 31.

Do You Need IELTS for Mitacs Globalink?

Mitacs itself does not impose one universal IELTS requirement.

Applicants must be able to work in the language specified for their research project, normally English or French. However, some participating-country partners impose their own language-test requirements.

That is why two applicants from different countries can receive different answers to the IELTS question.

For example, Pakistan’s 2027 eligibility conditions currently state no language proficiency examination requirement, while some other partner-country routes require formal proof.

Check your country-specific rules before paying for an English test unnecessarily.

How Should You Prepare Your Application?

Start with the documents that take time.

Mitacs asks applicants to prepare an academic reference letter from a professor, an updated CV and academic transcripts in English or French. If your university cannot issue the transcript in either language, a translated and notarized version is required.

Your application also asks about your research interests, academic background, skills, achievements and reasons for wanting to conduct research in Canada.

Then comes the part that deserves more attention than applicants often give it: project selection.

You must select multiple research projects and spread your choices across at least three Canadian provinces. Do not choose projects simply because the university name looks impressive. Look at the professor’s research problem, required skills and how closely those match work you have already done.

Mitacs says applications are evaluated using factors including academic performance, the statement of interest, reference quality and the match between the applicant’s experience and the proposed research.

Applications for the Mitacs Globalink Research Internship 2027 are currently open and must be submitted by Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. Pacific Time through the Globalink Student Platform.

For a strong application, the real task is not collecting the largest number of certificates. It is finding research projects where your academic background gives a Canadian professor a convincing reason to choose you.
