FLAD Reengagement Program 2026 Open for U.S. Students Invited to Return to Portugal With Funded Impact Projects

A new international mobility opportunity has just opened for U.S. students and professionals who once studied or worked in Portugal and want to return to the country with a purpose. The Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD) has officially launched its FLAD Reengagement Program, designed to support impactful academic, social, and professional projects that strengthen Portugal-U.S. ties.

This newly introduced program arrives at a time when academic mobility between the United States and Portugal is reaching record levels. With growing numbers of U.S. students choosing Portugal for education and research, FLAD is now offering a structured pathway for alumni and young professionals to reconnect with the country and contribute to its development through funded projects.

If you previously studied, volunteered, researched, or worked in Portugal and are looking for a meaningful return, this opportunity could support your next international project.

Who Can Apply for the FLAD Reengagement Program?

This program specifically targets U.S. citizens who already have a connection with Portugal and wish to build on it through a structured project.

Eligible applicants must:

  • Be U.S. citizens
  • Be up to 35 years old at the time of application
  • Have previously studied, worked, researched, or volunteered in Portugal
  • Present a clear and feasible project proposal with social, academic, or economic impact
  • Demonstrate leadership, autonomy, and community engagement
  • Obtain a letter of affiliation from a Portuguese host institution

Knowledge of the Portuguese language is not mandatory, but applicants with language skills may receive additional consideration.

What Kind of Projects Are Eligible?

FLAD is looking for innovative and meaningful initiatives that strengthen Portugal-U.S. connections. A wide range of project types will be considered, provided they align with the program’s objectives.

Eligible project formats include:

  • Academic research or thesis-related fieldwork in Portugal
  • Social innovation and community development projects
  • Service-learning initiatives with non-profit organizations
  • Internships, residencies, or training programs in Portuguese institutions
  • Cultural, artistic, or community engagement initiatives
  • Projects strengthening Portuguese-American community relations
  • Other creative proposals that enhance bilateral collaboration

Projects must demonstrate feasibility, impact potential, and alignment with the program’s mission.

Funding Package for Selected Participants

Selected candidates will receive a one-time grant ranging from €3,000 to €5,000, depending on the project scope and proposed budget.

This funding is designed to support project implementation costs and requires a minimum stay of 30 days in Portugal. The grant serves as an incentive rather than a salary and can be combined with personal savings, institutional funding, or additional sponsorship.

The financial support enables applicants to return to Portugal, execute their projects, and build sustainable partnerships without the pressure of full self-funding.
