Top 20 Pharmacy Universities in Germany (2027) for Bachelor, Master and PhD Admissions

Germany has an odd position in global pharmacy education.

It does not currently own the world’s highest-ranked pharmacy school. Harvard leads the 2026 QS Pharmacy & Pharmacology ranking, Monash University is second, while UCL and Oxford share third place.

Yet for a student actually paying for a degree, Germany can make a surprisingly powerful counter-offer: established pharmaceutical research universities, a large European life-sciences industry and, at most public universities, no conventional tuition fee at all.

For students planning to begin pharmacy, pharmaceutical sciences or doctoral research in 2027–2028, that deserves more attention than a rankings table alone.

First, Germany Does Not Normally Offer a BPharm in 2027

This is the first trap international applicants need to avoid.

If you want to become a licensed pharmacist in Germany, you normally study Pharmazie leading to the Staatsexamen, rather than completing a conventional three-year Bachelor of Pharmacy.

The university component usually lasts eight semesters. It is followed by practical training and further state examination requirements before pharmacist licensure. DAAD itself classifies pharmacy among the professions for which a State Examination is required.

Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees do exist in pharmaceutical science, but they are generally aimed more towards drug discovery, biotechnology, medicinal chemistry, industrial research and PhD progression.

LMU Munich is particularly unusual because it offers a dedicated Pharmaceutical Sciences BSc/MSc pathway as well as professional Pharmacy.

10 Strong Pharmacy Universities to Put at the Top of a 2027 List

There is no sensible official German league table ranking every Pharmacy faculty from one to twenty. International rankings also measure research and citations rather than how well an individual student will be trained.

For that reason, the following should be treated as a research-strength and international-profile shortlist rather than a fabricated 1–10 hierarchy.

University Pharmacy-related route worth watching for 2027 Entry
Heidelberg University Pharmacy Staatsexamen; doctoral research Winter
University of Bonn Pharmacy Staatsexamen; MSc Drug Research; PhD Summer + winter for Pharmacy
LMU Munich Pharmacy Staatsexamen; BSc/MSc Pharmaceutical Sciences; PhD Summer + winter for Pharmacy
University of Tübingen Pharmacy Staatsexamen; pharmaceutical research Winter
University of Freiburg Pharmacy Staatsexamen; PhD/research Winter
Goethe University Frankfurt Pharmacy Staatsexamen; pharmaceutical research Check 2027 cycle
University of Münster Pharmacy Staatsexamen; MSc Pharmaceutical Science; PhD Summer + winter
Freie Universität Berlin Pharmacy Staatsexamen; MSc Pharmaceutical Research; PhD Summer + winter
Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf Pharmacy Staatsexamen; pharmaceutical research Summer + winter
Philipps University Marburg Pharmacy Staatsexamen; extensive pharmaceutical research Summer + winter

Heidelberg provides a useful benchmark for the strength of this group: in the 2026 QS Pharmacy & Pharmacology ranking it is third in Germany and within the world’s top 100. Bonn separately reports a top-100 QS Pharmacy & Pharmacology position.

Münster also deserves more attention than international applicants often give it. Its Pharmacy programme accommodates hundreds of students and its graduate portfolio includes an MSc Pharmaceutical Science that DAAD currently lists as admission-unrestricted for suitably qualified graduates.

Another 10 Pharmacy Universities You Should Not Ignore in Germany

Here is where an applicant can become smarter than somebody simply copying the QS table.

These universities may have less international brand recognition in Pharmacy, but they teach the same nationally regulated professional subject and can provide additional geographic choices when applicants rank their preferred study locations.

University Pharmacy route 2027 planning advantage
University of Würzburg Staatsexamen Summer + winter entry
FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg Staatsexamen Winter entry
University of Hamburg Staatsexamen Winter entry
University of Regensburg Staatsexamen Winter entry
Kiel University Staatsexamen Summer + winter entry
Friedrich Schiller University Jena Staatsexamen Winter entry
Leipzig University Staatsexamen Winter entry
Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg Staatsexamen Winter entry
University of Greifswald Staatsexamen Summer + winter entry
Saarland University Staatsexamen Winter entry

Calling these “easy admission universities” would be misleading.

German Pharmacy is nationally admission restricted. Lower international ranking does not remove that restriction. Greifswald, for example, still operates a restricted Pharmacy programme, while DAAD records 71 places in one recent winter intake.

What these universities give you is something more defensible: additional study locations and, in several cases, another intake opportunity.

Kiel accepts first-semester Pharmacy students in both summer and winter. Würzburg does the same, as do Greifswald and several universities in the first group.

That can matter enormously when constructing a 2027 application strategy.

What Are the 2027–2028 Pharmacy Admission Application Dates?

For most Pharmacy programmes in Germany, applicants targeting an October 2027 start should expect the main application period to fall between May and July 2027, while universities offering a summer intake usually accept applications between November 2026 and January 2027 for an April 2027 start.

The final winter 2027/28 Hochschulstart calendar has not yet been published, so the months below are based on established admission patterns from previous cycles rather than confirmed 2027 deadlines.

University Expected 2027 Intake Likely Application Months
Heidelberg University October 2027 May–July 2027
University of Bonn April / October 2027 Dec 2026–Jan 2027 / May–July 2027
LMU Munich April / October 2027 Nov–Jan / May–July
University of Tübingen October 2027 May–July 2027
University of Freiburg October 2027 June–July 2027
Goethe University Frankfurt April / October 2027 Nov–Jan / May–July
University of Münster April / October 2027 Nov–Jan / May–July
Freie Universität Berlin April / October 2027 Dec–Jan / June–July
Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf April / October 2027 Nov–Jan / May–July
Philipps University Marburg April / October 2027 Dec–Jan / June–July
University of Würzburg April / October 2027 Nov–Jan / May–July
FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg October 2027 May–July 2027
University of Hamburg October 2027 May–July 2027
University of Regensburg October 2027 May–July 2027
Kiel University April / October 2027 Nov–Jan / May–July
Friedrich Schiller University Jena October 2027 May–July 2027
Leipzig University October 2027 May–July 2027
Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg October 2027 May–July 2027
University of Greifswald April / October 2027 Nov–Jan / May–July
Saarland University October 2027 May–July 2027

For previous Pharmacy admission cycles, January 15, 2027 has commonly been the important deadline for summer-semester admission, while May 31 and July 15, 2027 are recurring milestones in the winter Hochschulstart process. Applicants should therefore begin preparing documents several months before these dates rather than waiting for portals to open.

International students should also check whether their application must go through Hochschulstart, the university’s own international portal, or another credential-assessment route, because procedures can differ for applicants holding non-German qualifications.

One notable change already relevant to the 2027 cycle is Hamburg: the university plans to use the PhaST pharmacy aptitude test from winter semester 2027/28 as part of its selection process. Applicants considering Hamburg—or other universities that already use PhaST—should therefore prepare for admission testing well before the July application period.

For the widest choice of universities, October 2027 will remain the stronger intake, although applicants who are ready earlier can also target the April 2027 intake at universities such as Bonn, LMU Munich, Münster, FU Berlin, Düsseldorf, Marburg, Würzburg, Kiel and Greifswald.

Bachelor, Master’s or PhD: Which Route Should You Choose?

Your intended career should decide this.

Choose Pharmacy Staatsexamen if your objective is professional pharmacist licensure in Germany.

Choose Pharmaceutical Sciences or Pharmaceutical Research if you are more interested in drug development, laboratory science, biotechnology, pharmaceutical manufacturing or research.

Among the most interesting alternatives are LMU’s Pharmaceutical Sciences BSc/MSc, Bonn’s MSc Drug Research, Münster’s MSc Pharmaceutical Science and FU Berlin’s MSc Pharmaceutical Research.

For PhD applicants, Germany becomes considerably less tied to an “admission season”. Doctorates are frequently organised around a research supervisor, laboratory or structured doctoral programme, meaning prospective candidates should begin approaching suitable research groups well before the semester in which they hope to start.

What Will Pharmacy Study Cost in Germany in 2027?

This is where the case for Germany becomes difficult to ignore.

DAAD says Bachelor’s courses and most Master’s courses at public higher-education institutions generally carry no tuition fee. Students instead pay a semester contribution, currently roughly €70–€430 per semester.

Living expenses are the bigger commitment. DAAD currently recommends approximately €900–€1,200 per month, depending heavily on the city. Munich will generally hurt a student’s wallet more than Halle or Greifswald.

There are important exceptions.

Non-EU students at public universities in Baden-Württemberg generally pay €1,500 per semester, affecting choices such as Heidelberg, Freiburg and Tübingen. Doctoral students are exempt from that state tuition charge.

Bavarian institutions are now also permitted to charge non-EU tuition individually, so applicants considering LMU, Würzburg, Regensburg or FAU should verify the exact programme fee for 2027 rather than assuming every German university is automatically free.

A sensible 2027 budget is therefore:

  • Public-university tuition: commonly €0
  • Semester contribution: around €70–€430
  • Baden-Württemberg non-EU tuition: normally €1,500 per semester
  • Living expenses: around €10,800–€14,400 per year
  • Laboratory/books/personal costs: additional

Australia Beats Germany in Rankings. So Why Choose Germany?

If rankings were the entire story, Australia would have a formidable argument.

Monash University sits at number two in the 2026 QS Pharmacy & Pharmacology ranking, behind Harvard and ahead of almost every university on earth. The UK also occupies the top tier through UCL and Oxford.

But it would be intellectually sloppy to conclude that Australia therefore “produces better pharmacy graduates”.

Rankings measure research reputation, citations, employer reputation and related indicators. They do not conduct an international examination proving that every graduate from one country is better trained than every graduate from another.

Germany’s advantage is different.

Its pharmacist education is nationally regulated, combines substantial science and laboratory work with state examinations and practical training, and can be undertaken at a public university for a fraction of the tuition normally associated with an international degree in Australia, Britain or the United States.

So Germany does not win the prestige-at-any-price contest.

It may win the quality-to-cost contest.

For many international families, that is the more consequential ranking.

German Scholarships Available for Pharmacy Applicants in 2027

There is funding, but applicants should understand where Germany’s scholarship system is strongest.

DAAD funding is considerably more plentiful for graduates, researchers and doctoral candidates than for somebody simply arriving for a first undergraduate Pharmacy degree.

The current DAAD Phd scholarship as well as DAAD Master scholarship programmes specifically allows funding beginning in 2027 and can support doctoral study for up to four years.

Current DAAD doctoral funding reaches €1,400 per month in relevant programmes, with insurance and travel support potentially added. Some 2027 calls have deadlines during August or November 2026 depending on the applicant’s country.

Bachelor and State Examination applicants should also investigate:

  • Deutschlandstipendium
  • Germany university-specific scholarships
  • Foundations such as Friedrich Ebert, Heinrich Böll and Konrad Adenauer, where eligibility fits
  • Erasmus+ mobility funding
  • DAAD’s scholarship database for nationality-specific opportunities

The important point is that “tuition-free” and “fully funded” are not the same thing. A student may owe no tuition but still need roughly €1,000 per month to live in Germany.

Which German Pharmacy Universities Would I Apply to for 2027?

An international applicant should resist building a list consisting only of Heidelberg, LMU and Bonn.

For pharmaceutical research prestige, those universities make sense.

For an English-oriented graduate route, FU Berlin’s Pharmaceutical Research programme deserves attention.

For professional Pharmacy applicants, adding locations such as Kiel, Greifswald, Würzburg, Marburg, Düsseldorf and Münster can create a much broader application strategy—particularly because several offer both summer and winter entry.

And if becoming a pharmacist is the end goal, remember the most important fact in this entire guide:

Do not search Germany only for “Bachelor of Pharmacy”. Search for “Pharmazie Staatsexamen”.

Germany’s system looks slightly awkward from outside because it refuses to fit neatly into the international BPharm template.

Once that difference is understood, however, the attraction becomes clearer: serious pharmaceutical science, nationally regulated professional training, numerous research universities and a public-university cost structure that some of the world’s highest-ranked pharmacy destinations simply cannot match.
