2 Research Route Fellowships 2027 Open at Uppsala University Currently

Two research routes are currently open through the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (SCAS), but they serve different needs. Researchers seeking a paid, 23-month fellowship position on health inequity have until 1 October 2026 to apply for the NNF-IAS fellowship.

Scholars seeking roughly two weeks to two months in Uppsala can apply for a SCAS short-term research stay until 26 February 2027, but must normally finance the visit themselves. Decide which arrangement you can undertake before preparing a proposal.

The 23-month Stipend comes with a health-inequity research commitment

NNF-IAS offers five paid fellowship positions, but SCAS is only one of four possible main hosts. Applicants rank two institutes from SCAS in Sweden, AIAS in Denmark, CAS in Norway and HCAS in Finland. Fellows join a Nordic group working on Inequity in Health. Projects can study social determinants, health technologies, unequal opportunities or environmental pressures on health. They need not focus on the Nordic region, but must explain the value of the Nordic setting and interdisciplinary collaboration.

The host pays a stipend based on seniority and local employment terms. The programme also provides relocation assistance, one-way travel subject to prior approval and a research budget of up to EUR 20,000 for the entire fellowship, subject to a justified proposal and later approval. The research budget supports project costs and required visits to partner institutes; it is not an extra personal stipend. The appointment is full-time and consecutive, from 1 September 2027 to 31 July 2029.

The Uppsala visit offers research time, but no standard stipend

SCAS short-term stays are for scholars who can finance a visit of approximately two weeks to two months. Researchers from any country may apply individually. Groups of two to five may propose collaborative work, but every member submits an individual application. Each applicant must have held a PhD or equivalent doctorate for at least three years at application. Visitors pursue their own research and participate in SCAS academic events.

SCAS expects short-term researchers to pay their own salary, accommodation and travel and handle visas and travel arrangements. It may help find accommodation if circumstances permit, but promises neither housing nor funding. Places depend on office availability, with no fixed number of stays. Applicants may list more than one possible date range within the stated autumn or spring semester.

Which researchers should spend time on each application?

Start with your doctorate date, then check the theme, mobility rule and your budget. NNF-IAS normally requires two to ten years of postdoctoral experience by 1 October 2026. Its guide gives an eligible PhD award window of 1 October 2016 through 1 October 2024, inclusive, with rules for qualifying career breaks. For each of your two preferred hosts, you must not have lived or carried out your main work or study activity in that country for more than 12 months in the two years before the deadline. Failure for either host preference disqualifies the application.

The short stay instead requires a doctorate held for at least three years. Your project need not fit the NNF-IAS health theme, but you should explain why SCAS specifically helps your research and what you would contribute. If a salary or paid travel is essential, the short-stay invitation alone will not meet that need.

Two calls, two portals: how do you apply?

Use GrantOne for NNF-IAS and Varbi for the SCAS short stay; submitting one form does not enter you for the other.

For the paid NNF-IAS fellowship:

1. Read the NNF-IAS call and applicant guide. Check your PhD date and mobility history for both intended host countries, then rank two academically suitable institutes.
2. Create a profile in GrantOne. Prepare the PhD diploma, a CV and publication list of no more than ten pages, a project description of no more than three pages including references, a one-page project plan and a justified research budget in euros. A diploma outside the Latin alphabet needs a certified English translation.
3. Complete the host-preference, mobility, ethics and AI-use fields; upload the PDFs and submit one application before 12:00 noon CEST on 1 October 2026. A project description exceeding three pages will be rejected.

For the self-funded SCAS short-term research stay:

1. Read the short-stay requirements and Varbi link and the short-stay FAQ. Choose one or more workable visit periods.
2. Prepare PDFs: a one-to-two-page CV; a list of up to ten major scholarly publications; a project description of no more than 1,500 words; and three separate answers of no more than 100 words each on why SCAS, how the stay benefits you and how you will contribute.
3. Complete Varbi, upload the files and submit before 23:59 CET on 26 February 2027. Plan finances and allow time for travel and any required visa if invited.

Application deadlines: The last date to apply for the NNF-IAS Fellowship Programme on Health and Sustainability 2027–29 is 1 October 2026 at 12:00 noon CEST, including its GrantOne uploads and budget. The last date to apply for an SCAS Short-term Research Stay in 2026–27 is 26 February 2027 at 23:59 CET, including its Varbi uploads. These are separate calls with separate deadlines.
