You do not need to be a doctor to belong in this field. SpaceMed also welcomes specified life-science, psychology and kinesiology graduates, alongside engineering master’s graduates and other qualifying backgrounds. Its focus is how human bodies respond when their surroundings change dramatically.

If that question connects with your studies, the next task is to demonstrate the link clearly. This guide explains the country route, degree-specific entry rules, funding and the short video and documents needed for the application.

01 Your SpaceMed study route through three countries

The SpaceMed mobility plan specifies one taught semester at each partner, followed by a thesis semester. These three countries form the normal taught route for students.

France

Université de Caen Normandie · Caen

Semester 1. The university’s COMETE laboratory contributes space-physiology research expertise.

Germany

Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin · Berlin

Semester 2 at the consortium’s medical-university partner.

Slovenia

Jožef Stefan International Postgraduate School · Ljubljana

Semester 3, followed by the separate thesis stage.

Your fourth-semester research placement can be with a consortium institution, associated partner or external institution. Successful students receive a master’s degree from each of the three universities and a SpaceMed Diploma Supplement.

The programme description emphasises laboratory work and field studies involving space-flight analogues and extreme environments. I would connect your application to a human-response question you can explain through your actual scientific training.

02 Which qualifications can enter SpaceMed?

The SpaceMed admission criteria distinguish the required degree level by discipline. That distinction matters especially if you are applying from engineering.

Academic background Published entry qualification
Life sciences, psychology or kinesiology Bachelor’s degree equivalent to 180 ECTS.
Engineering Master’s degree.
Medicine or another relevant discipline Medical degree, or a degree with significant study of humans in space or extreme environments.

English must reach B2. Accepted evidence includes IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 87 or Cambridge B2 First, with test certificates no older than three years. Native English speakers may provide a declaration on honour; previous English-medium students may submit a university instruction-language certificate. The OLS test is not accepted.

You may apply before graduation, but must complete your qualification before joining and supply degree proof for university enrolment.

03 What does SpaceMed cover—and what comes from the allowance?

The SpaceMed scholarship rules provide €1,400 per month for 24 months: €33,600 in monthly support, alongside the participation-fee waiver. Travel, visas, accommodation and other living costs must be managed from that allowance; SpaceMed adds no separate living-expense fund.

The programme reports around 20 Erasmus Mundus scholarships annually. Admission and scholarship decisions are separate, and ranking affects the offer you receive. Previous EMJM or Erasmus Mundus Master Course/Joint Doctorate scholarship beneficiaries are excluded; the programme also limits awards to two nationals from the same country.

Academic excellence carries 40 selection points and background relevance 15. I would therefore make the connection between your transcript, research experience and proposed interests easy to follow, while using the video to explain your motivation.

04 How to complete the SpaceMed 2027 application

The current SpaceMed application instructions require an English-language file. Include originals alongside certified English translations where necessary.

  • CV, degree certificates, transcripts and accepted English-language evidence; Europass CV format is recommended.
  • Two recommendations: at least one from the faculty awarding your degree, and the other from an employer, internship supervisor or academic supervisor.
  • An English MP4 motivation video lasting less than one minute, covering personal and academic motivation and relevant skills.
  • Valid passport or national ID, plus residence evidence issued within the 12 months before the submission deadline. Upload both nationality documents together in one PDF if you have dual nationality.
  1. Create an account through the official SpaceMed application platform. Select “All campaigns”, then “Application EMJM SpaceMed”.
  2. Complete the forms in English and indicate that you wish to be considered for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship.
  3. Upload every required document and the video. Proof of residence must show your name, exact home address and issue date.
  4. Submit before the cutoff and retain the automatic email acknowledgement. Check your spam folder if it does not arrive, then monitor the selection messages.

The application is free under EMJM funding rules. A draft account or saved form still needs final submission; documents sent by post or email are not accepted.

05 SpaceMed details that can make a complete file incomplete

Use home-address evidence, not an identity card as proof of residence. SpaceMed rejects identity documents and workplace-address certificates for this purpose. Keep the video below one minute and include certified translations with originals; incomplete applications are rejected.

06 SpaceMed questions before you press submit

Can an engineering bachelor’s graduate use the engineering entry route?

The published engineering route requires a master’s degree. A bachelor’s alone does not meet that route; another qualification would need to satisfy the separately stated relevant-degree criterion.

Is IELTS compulsory if my previous degree was taught in English?

No. SpaceMed accepts a certificate from your university confirming that your previous studies were taught in English. This is a stated alternative to the accepted tests.

Can I hold SpaceMed and another EMJM scholarship together?

No. SpaceMed requires scholarship recipients to waive any other EMJM scholarship for the duration of the course. Decide which offer you will accept before committing to incompatible funding.
