15 USA Universities Scholarships Without IELTS for Fall 2027 Admissions (My Research)
🇺🇸 UNITED STATES · FALL 2027IELTS does not have to stand between you and a US bachelor’s degree. For Fall 2027 admissions, international applicants can consider universities that accept another English test, recognise qualifying English-medium education, or use other evidence of proficiency. This updated guide brings together 15 US universities and five scholarship options so you can build a shortlist around your qualifications and budget.
The useful question is which route you qualify for. A Duolingo score, a school-language exemption and conditional English preparation are different options. The policies below focus on international first-year undergraduate applicants; master’s and PhD requirements must be researched separately.
Some Fall 2027 applications and scholarship terms are already published. Where an award page states a continuing policy rather than a dated 2027 offer, that distinction is identified. Meeting an English minimum allows consideration; it does not guarantee admission or funding.
First-year bachelor’s admission; 15 individual universities.
DET, PTE, TOEFL, qualifying school education or specified SAT/ACT routes.
Five options; most reduce costs rather than cover the full budget.
2027 applications confirmed at examples including CU Boulder and Alabama; other dates vary.
Application fees, English evidence and scholarship deadlines are university-specific.
1 November 2026. Current policies are not a guarantee against later 2027 changes.
01 What does “without IELTS” mean for your application?
It usually means proving English another way—not removing the English requirement. Choose from these three routes before paying for a test or application.
Use DET, PTE, TOEFL or another specifically listed qualification. Check overall scores, subscores and validity.
Your education, citizenship or school examinations may satisfy a published rule. An MOI letter works only where that rule permits it.
A pathway or conditional offer may require extra English study before degree entry. Ask about additional time, cost and progression conditions.
My recommendation is to shortlist by academic fit and remaining annual cost, then select a test accepted by every university on that shortlist. A low language minimum does not establish how selective the university or your major will be.
02 Compare 15 universities, then follow the official application route
The following routes are verified on official undergraduate pages. DET means Duolingo English Test; PTE means PTE Academic. Scores are published admission thresholds unless otherwise qualified. University names link directly to the relevant official requirements.
| University and official requirements | Verified route without IELTS | Condition that matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Arizona State University | DET 95 for general-requirement programmes. | Nursing requires 100; specified higher-requirement engineering programmes 105; specified journalism programmes 120. |
| 2. University of Arizona | DET 110 or PTE 60. | An education route includes three years at an English-medium high school with at least a C in English. |
| 3. University of Alabama | DET 110 or PTE 54. | Specified SAT, ACT, IB and school-exam routes also exist. Scholarship SAT/ACT thresholds are separate. |
| 4. University of Alabama at Birmingham | DET 120. | Exemptions include at least two years at a US high school or 24 transferable semester hours at a US college. |
| 5. University of Colorado Boulder | DET 115 or PTE 58. | MOI letters alone do not qualify. English evidence must be on file for scholarship consideration. |
| 6. Drexel University | DET, PTE and Cambridge accepted. | A first-year exam exemption can apply after three complete years of English-medium high school. This FAQ does not give one universal DET cutoff. |
| 7. University of Dayton | DET 105 or PTE 50 for full admission. | School-based exemptions have specific country/institution conditions; English-medium schooling is not a blanket waiver. |
| 8. University of Delaware | DET 110+ or PTE 53 for the direct-admission threshold. | DET 95–109 is listed for Academic Transitions. Meeting a minimum does not guarantee direct placement. |
| 9. Rice University | DET 130 or Cambridge 185. | At least two years of full-time English-curriculum study before applying is another accepted route. |
| 10. University of Iowa | SAT Reading/Writing 540 or ACT English 21; TOEFL is also listed. | Use the undergraduate policy and its placement rules. Do not transfer DET requirements from a different admissions page. |
| 11. Northwood University | DET 110 or PTE 48. | A qualifying three-year education completed entirely in English can support an exemption; ESL or blended instruction does not qualify. |
| 12. LSU New Orleans, formerly University of New Orleans | DET 100 or PTE 50. | First-year applicants must also meet the separate mathematics requirement; an English score does not replace it. |
| 13. California State University, Los Angeles | DET 95 or PTE 44 for undergraduates. | These are Cal State LA figures. Other CSU campuses and graduate programmes have different requirements. |
| 14. University of Arkansas | DET 110 or PTE 58. | Writing scores can require additional English coursework even when the admission threshold is met. |
| 15. University of South Florida | SAT Reading/Writing 490; or ACT English 17 AND Reading 19; or CLT verbal/writing 38. | USF does not accept IELTS, TOEFL or DET as substitutes for these freshman test requirements. These English floors do not guarantee admission. |
The clearest school-language routes here include Rice, Drexel, Northwood and Arizona, but each uses different conditions. CU Boulder illustrates the opposite trap: an English-medium letter by itself is insufficient. Match your actual education to the policy rather than asking every university for the same generic waiver.
Five scholarship options to compare with your shortlist
English eligibility and scholarship eligibility are separate decisions. Alabama explicitly labels its schedule and award table for 2027. The other entries below reflect current published award policies; where a separate 2027 value is not stated, treat the amount as a planning reference until confirmed in your offer.
1. Alabama Presidential Scholarship
2027 award: $28,000 per year.
First-time international freshmen: GPA 3.50+ and SAT 1420–1600 or ACT 32–36. Automatic consideration through the admission application; DET alone cannot establish this scholarship eligibility.
2. UAB International Scholarship
Current policy: $7,500 annually, renewable for up to four years.
Applicants must live outside the US, anticipate F-1 status, have a qualifying overseas high-school diploma earned within three years and GPA 3.0+, and have no postsecondary enrolment. External/government funding excludes eligibility; funds are limited.
3. Dayton International Merit Scholarships
Current published maximum: $34,000 per year towards tuition.
Automatic consideration after the application and required documents arrive. Dayton expressly says it does not offer full-tuition scholarships; housing and other costs remain.
4. Delaware International Scholarships
Currently published awards: $10,000–$15,000 per year.
First-year international applicants are automatically considered without a separate scholarship form. Awards depend on availability; the university does not offer international students need-based aid.
5. Rice Merit Scholarships — see Rice’s linked admissions page above.
Award values vary; no single guaranteed amount is published.
Domestic and international first-year applicants receive automatic consideration. Need-based aid is a separate route: indicate your request when applying; international admission is need-aware.
I would calculate tuition, housing, meals, insurance and other expenses after the confirmed award. A scholarship worth $15,000 is useful only if you can also finance the remaining cost; it should not be presented as a fully funded place.
Turn your shortlist into submitted applications
- Choose the correct level, major and entry term. Select Fall 2027 first-year admission. Check the department’s additional requirements before using a university-wide English minimum.
- Confirm your language route. Send official test results as instructed or submit the exact exemption evidence requested. Obtain any waiver decision before relying on it. Allow time for score reporting and document review.
- Prepare the school-specific application. Gather secondary transcripts, graduation or predicted-completion evidence, translations and identity details. Add references, essays, portfolios or credential evaluations only where required. Our personal statement guide can help plan an essay, but the university’s prompt controls its content.
- Submit through the university’s approved system. Use its application link or the Common App where accepted. Budget for application fees: Rice and Delaware each publish a $75 fee. A language waiver does not waive application fees.
- Complete funding requirements and monitor the portal. Submit SAT/ACT results when an award requires them, even if admission is test-optional. Use an optional motivation-letter guide only when a requested scholarship statement calls for one. Review missing-item notices, your offer and remaining-cost evidence before committing.
For the dated examples below, use CU Boulder’s 2027 international application page, Alabama’s Fall 2027 scholarship timeline and Iowa’s Fall 2027 testing and scholarship schedule. Rice’s application dates and UAB’s standing award deadline appear on their linked pages above.
03 Which assumptions could cost you an offer or scholarship?
Avoid these four shortcuts: treating “test-optional” as an English waiver; using graduate scores for bachelor’s entry; assuming a pathway is direct degree admission; or sending English results after a scholarship deadline. CU Boulder specifically requires English evidence for scholarship review, while Alabama’s automatic awards require their own GPA and SAT/ACT combination.
This update also separates an individual CSU campus from the whole California State University system. A score accepted at Cal State LA should never be copied across every campus.
04 Questions international applicants ask before paying
Can I apply without taking any English test?
Sometimes. Rice, Drexel, Northwood and Arizona publish education-based routes with different conditions. You must satisfy the exact rule; simply owning an MOI letter does not establish eligibility everywhere.
Does applying without IELTS make a scholarship easier to win?
No. English evidence satisfies a language condition; scholarships evaluate their own academic and other criteria. Alabama’s Presidential award, for example, still requires qualifying GPA and SAT/ACT results.
Can I use the same DET result at every university?
Only where the university and major accept it and your score meets their conditions. USF’s freshman route is a clear exception, and Drexel’s FAQ should not be assigned a minimum borrowed from another programme.
Does a conditional offer remove the need to improve English?
No. Conditional routes can require additional study or a qualifying result before degree entry. Obtain the pathway cost, progression rules and scholarship implications before accepting.
05 Which dates should Fall 2027 applicants work towards?
There is no single Fall 2027 deadline covering these 15 universities.
Use the verified examples below to plan backwards. These are selected dates, not a complete calendar for all majors or institutions. The relevant portal’s local closing time and required-document rules control submission.
| University | Published timing | Applicant consequence |
|---|---|---|
| CU Boulder — confirmed 2027 application | Early action: 15 November 2026. Regular decision: 15 January 2027. | For scholarship consideration, English evidence must arrive with the admission application and no later than regular decision. |
| University of Alabama — confirmed Fall 2027 schedule | Scholarship priority deadline: 4 December 2026. | Submit the complete admission file and required scholarship test results by this priority deadline. |
| Rice — current 2026–2027 application cycle | Regular decision: 4 January 2027. | Special programmes can have earlier dates; merit consideration accompanies admission review. |
| University of Iowa — confirmed Fall 2027 testing schedule | Regular decision: 1 February 2027; documents/test-score updates by 8 February 2027. Scholarship tests must be taken by 12 December 2026. | Check the international/major-specific requirements as well; a later general admission date is not a scholarship extension. |
| UAB — standing annual award policy | Applicants must be accepted by 1 May for August-intake scholarship consideration. | The page does not separately label this as the 2027 cycle. Confirm continuation for your intake and apply early because funding is first-come, first-served. |
The remaining universities and awards have their own calendars. Where a separate Fall 2027 date or award value has not been confirmed in this guide, use the current application portal rather than carrying a 2026 deadline forward.
