AI Ethics Fellowship 2025 at Harvard University

The Center for Hellenic Studies (CHS), in collaboration with Harvard University and the Greek National Centre for Social Research, has announced the Fellowship in AI Ethics for postdoctoral researchers. This prestigious 12-month fellowship will run from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026, and is designed for scholars dedicated to investigating the ethical, societal, and philosophical implications of artificial intelligence.

About the Fellowship

The Fellowship in AI Ethics provides an opportunity for one postdoctoral researcher to conduct original research that contributes to the development of comprehensive ethical frameworks for AI development and deployment. The research aims to promote democratic decision-making in the AI space while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration between philosophy, sociology, law, public policy, ethics, and computer science.

The fellowship underscores CHS’s commitment to supporting AI Ethics-related initiatives in Greece and abroad. The selected fellow will engage in various CHS activities, collaborate with scholars, and contribute to discussions that highlight Greece’s emerging role in AI Ethics research.

  • $12,000 stipend to support the fellow’s research.

  • Travel expenses (airfare and accommodations) covered for CHS-related events in Greece or the U.S.
  • Academic support and advising from a distinguished academic committee.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Hold a PhD degree (or equivalent), defended before January 1, 2025.
  • Be fluent in English (knowledge of Modern Greek is preferable).
  • Preferably be based in Greece for the majority of the fellowship duration.
  • Not apply to other CHS fellowship programs in the same cycle.

Selection Criteria

The CHS selection committee will prioritize applications that:

  • Clearly outline how the fellowship will enable the successful completion of the research project.
  • Show potential contributions to the field of AI Ethics, the humanities, and social sciences.
  • Demonstrate the applicant’s capability through academic achievements, prior publications, and supporting references.
  • Prioritize early-career postdoctoral researchers or those in non-tenure-track positions.

Application Process & Deadline

The last date to apply for the Fellowship in AI Ethics is March 5, 2025 (midnight, Eastern European Time). Applicants must submit:

  • A detailed research proposal
  • A curriculum vitae (CV)
  • A sample of published work
  • Names and contact information of two (02) references (Reference letters must be submitted by March 12, 2025 via the CHS Greece application platform https://greece.chs.harvard.edu/research-fellowships/ai-ethics.)
  • Some candidates may be invited for online interviews in April 2025.

The final decision will be communicated to applicants by early May 2025.
